New van prices

I don’t know enough to say that everyone was at it, and would be interested to know the source of this information, but I’m baffled that VW got away with it for so long. We do emissions certification testing both in our test cells and on machines and the level of oversight, scrutiny, audits, etc. by both the EU and EPA doesn’t leave any room for cheating. This was all in place long before the VW scandal broke. I don’t doubt that one or two companies may have “tidied their act” post VW, but if it was industry wide, it would have been all over the news and press.

Fully agree with everything re. Batteries, hydrogen is the way forward.

If you google, there’s lots of “emissions claims” going on. I’m pretty sure there’s a Mercedes’ one at the moment!

Has anyone seen the boat full of Audi/Vw/Bentleys that’s on fire at the moment, that’s sure to push prices and demand up!

there is no end of companies trying to push through the emissions claims
To be fair its all crap and doesnt really change anything, people got away with paying less ved so whats the harm?
the mot test is crap anyway as diesels are only smoke tested so vehicles with dpf removed will pass this test anyway.
as for newer motors being better......
currently have a courtesy pickup a 2019 2.0 ranger to temporary replace the 2016 3.2 ranger. Doesnt really mean much for commercials as the ved is the same but so far the mpg has been worse on the smaller engine, not done any long runs yet but from the running about and couple of tows its down on mpg

WOW…..that sparked a few comments!!!
For what it is worth it was good old plain fraud.
To have a device that completely cheats when in the known test conditions to provide false emissions data is just that…..fraud.
The uk government has lost out on company car tax revenue as these cars where banded lower than they should have been.
I seem to think they where caught due to a Californian motoring journalist doing real life emission testing. And they where not even close to the figures they claimed.
My comments relate to the fact that the US has acted to ensure protection of the consumer. No such action by the EU.

None of the emissions or quoted mpg figures for vehicles are even remotely close to manufacturers figures, same as some 0-60 times it's all simulated on a rolling road for majority of the tests

Using a rolling road isn’t simulation, it’s done for consistency, same as a rolling road brake test for MOT’s. Repeatable conditions, with metered fuelling, ambient temp. Doing it on a test track, in different weather conditions, with different drivers, is more subject to cheating, inconsistency, etc.

no argument that what VW did was fraud, they were caught and convicted. To say everyone was at it is bollocks, and repeating a lot of hearsay unless these claims are upheld. You can bet your balls that if Ford, Toyota, GM etc. are up to the same tricks they won’t get away with it just because VW have been made an example of. Governments like to get their hands on a few easy tens of millions.

Also worth noting that VW didn’t perpetuate the fraud across every engine platform. Just happened to be their biggest engine range. Doubtful it could have happened without some very senior people being in on it.

Does a rolling road, take wind resistance, or drag from non powered wheels in to account

Does driving round a circuit or up and down the country take into account every road and weather condition a vehicle will ever encounter? The only way you can improve efficiency is to remove variables, such as changes in wind direction, deterioration or changes in road surface. There are also such things as four-wheeled rolling roads and wind tunnels.

Basically if you improve things on a rolling road you improve them in the real world. Like when we test engines on a test bed, if it shows improvement on the test bed it shows improvement when we stick the same hardware or software in a machine. Some of the tests involve fitting test bed engines with pump stacks, or transmissions driving into dynos, so the test is as close as possible to what it’ll see when fitted into the machine.

How many vehicles, ever get to within 10% of their quoted figures

Quite a lot, if you keep the tyres right and don’t drive like a mong. Some people actually get better consumption than the official figures. What do you expect, for example, Toyota to say? “Subtract 20% if you’re driving most of your time less than a mile up a 1 in 4 to the shops”, or “this vehicle may use more fuel stuck in a 5 mile tailback”. It’s no secret that what people actually get varies by the same number as there are owners, and the same driver won’t get the same consumption wherever they drive in the country. All makers vehicles are tested to the same standards, otherwise they could claim what they want, which in earlier years they did.

There are a few websites, Honest John and Fuelly for two, that give real world figures for consumption. I looked up for the Jimny, same age as mine, and official figures are given as around 39 mpg, but real world averages of anywhere from 10 to 42 mpg across those two sites. I average 39 mpg Without being particularly careful. But if you look at the range of figures for any given vehicle, it’s obvious that it’s not all down to the manufacturers misleading people.

Took nearly a year from order to arrive - the dealer nailed on some gypsy chrome that I definitely didn’t want (and will be removing tomorrow) but I’m happy to finally have a new whip!

Most importantly given the current situation, did you go for the Middle East option of factory fitted mounts for the heavy machine gun or anti aircraft gun in the pickup bed?

2.8 Invincible X auto.
First impressions are good tbh, I’d forgotten what it’s like to drive something comfortable, quiet and relatively pokey! I’ve not got my head around all it’s bells and whistles yet but it connects well to the phone etc.
It’ll be getting lathered in Waxoil as soon as it dries out, I’ve got a couple of vehicles to do at the same time which should minimise my own fully-waterproof recovery period!…
Should be able to get plenty of money back from some dirka dirka’s as a comfortable taliban taxi if the s**t hits the fan - a ring-mount would be pretty easy to nail into the bed!!!

Looks tidy right tyres an all👌...rollbars coming off? Or spray em with raptor coat. What rear cover u going for?
I was considering putting a canopy on this but haven’t decided which yet (as they all look crap IMO).
I ordered nothing on the back - the dealer had a mix-up somehow and my truck came with a silver roller-shutter and that chrome crap from the factory. The ridiculousness of it is those are both available in black for the same price - whoever spec’d it silver and chrome needs a kick in the balls and a poke in the eye!
Long and short is that I haven’t been charged for either - I’ll take the bar off tomorrow and probably get it powder coated black, and live with the silver mountain top for now.
Tyres were as-new off my old Navara. I wasn’t sure if they’d fit as are 285/60 r18 (standard are 265/60 r18). I took them to the BF Goodrich supplier who I bought them off originally - he made a phone call to BFG and refused to even try to fit them as was told by an ‘expert’ that they’d only go on with a 2 inch lift (which I have no interest in doing).
Another tyre fitter chucked one on a rim, we gave it a good looking at lock-to-lock and they fit with no rubbing whatsoever. Drives great with them on, ever so slightly more road noise but handles fine.

Tricky one rear covers, I've had them all, but think next time I'll go back to proper rear truckman style as if it won't go in the back it goes on ifor.
Bingo can't be arsed with pansy tyre guys. I only use one bloke who does loads of off-road and AG tyres. He knows what will go on and what won't...best profile etc ..usually not what your supposed to use but what actually works.
