Even with the cab dismantled the starter was way back to the right

Nearly thought I would need to remove the engine😳😳

But it’s out now what caused it🤔

solenoid not releasing properly and arcing at contacts ... wouldn't take long to catch fire ..... starter looks reasonable untouched or has that live broken off a pole on the end of the starter and shorted to earth ?

I had that on one of my machines. Smoke surrounding you as you sit there working didn't make for a good day. Luckily only melted the starter and didn't burn out the machine.

I remember years ago a poclain 75 had the exhaust blowing right at the starter like that and it melted the solenoid exciter wire to the battery live.
