yeh that'd make a lot of sense Mog .... ceramic retains heat well once warmed - as well as being resistant to it ... a sort of semi fluid thermal mass you can move with relative ease .... apart from the fact it'd be 'kin hot and easily form an insulating jacket with, around a smelting furnace ....Ali process being electric arc, anything to retain expensive heat'd be a major bonus .... doubt the balls are that cheap though?

WOW!! Crucible furnace smelter .... bet that costs to run .... can see why though if they'm just re-smelting scrap only

My uneducated guess would be that the ceramic balls are floated on top of the Ali once it’s melted to kept the heat in and reduce oxidation.

Just a guess so I may be wrong

Renamed the tread so to keep all my crap in one place

Took this wheel motor off a mobile cargo conveyor last year (got another one and the engine with hydraulic pumps,tank etc.)
Anyway pulled a load of tree stumps out with the ripper I made, but some are so big my 20 ton machine won’t lift them so putting them in a shredder maybe interesting so going to build a cone wood splitter to get them to a more manageable size when I get the time

Yes I could of turned one a year or two ago as I had a lathe that would cut a tapered thread but ended up parting with it
So have ordered a cheap one off eBay as it’s only an experiment at the moment not going to splash too much money yet but there is a 230mm wide cone that is 400mm long for only £300 so may end up with that, but as I don’t usually mess about with trees (unless Monkeybuisiness wants a bit of transportation with a man thrown in) so will probably only use it for this one job, I don’t mind making stuff from scrap where it’s only my time, but don’t like wasting money on a one trick pony also not sure how powerful the motor is yet so only got a 100 mm cone so far, we’ll see how it pans out plus I can use the motor to power an auger (when I build one)

Mog if you get stuck for time or your motor isn't great I've got an augertorque auger which I've been thinking of putting a cone on but haven't got round to it. your more than welcome to use if needed. It drives a 250mm auger reasonably well so would be interesting to see how it would shape with a cone on.

This arrived today

ordered it on Easter Monday and came from Poland so a quick turnaround looks well made with a hardened removable point just need to make an adapter to mate the two together (wish I’d seen the bigger one first) but never mind we’ll see how it shapes up

Many many years ago the farm i worked on, had a tractor driven one. It was ok if the material was the right stuff. But in wooly stuff it would just drill a hole. Different on a machine as you can put pressure on.
I wonder on roots weather it will just drill a hole. Look forward to see the results

Looking forward to seeing the results , I've used a pecker on a 3cx to split rings before but this should be a whole lot better!

Turned the adapter on the lathe that will join the hub to the cone and cut some 1” plate to make the hangers

Just wished I’d bought the bigger cone now as this will look a bit sad when assembled
Even managed to fine a lump of 80mm chrome rod from an old ram to make the pick up pins with

Looking at the components in one place I think the timber might bottom out on the hub/adapter I’m afraid to say mate. Could do with a longer shaft imo. I hope you prove me wrong though!

The bride came to that conclusion when she saw all the components together as well

I was thinking the same thing but made it short as it would be stronger but will have a piece of the 80mm shaft left over from the hanger pins so will turn a lump of that down
