Cut the old chrome rod to make a couple of pins with this left over

So stuck it in the lathe and ‘turned’ it into this

The new hub to cone adapter, all stuck together on the hub now

Looks a bit better, but still wished old gone for the bigger one

Got it lined up and welded

Looks like something off thunderbirds

I was hoping it was 9 inch wide, didn’t realise you meant overall length. I reckon it’ll drill in well, but might not have enough width to ‘pop’ the stumps.
If it’s strong enough and you can get it in you may have success by dragging it through/down the cut, forcing the timber apart. It’ll be a good test of your welds...

Know what you mean about girth it is a bit of an experiment at the moment as don’t even know if the motor will be powerful enough not a big job to get a bigger cone on it but may have a chew at a root or two tomorrow, on a plus note got it mounted on the duck and piped up

And all it’s cost me is £90 for the cone everything else is from the scrap pile, cutting gas and welding wire was supplied by the scrap yard I run out from so if I throw it away not lost too much only a day out of my life but hopefully learned a bit along the way
I’ve never messed about with wood so not sure how it will work but hopefully I will prove all you doubters wrong

Ha ha, I’m not doubting the concept or the construction, just the amount of ‘busting’ force that diameter cone will be able to generate. I’d imagine it’ll fly through straight grained timber, I’m not sure how well it will fair on roots as the grain goes in all directions though (which makes them incredibly strong unfortunately) .

Hi Mog. Did the same thing myself. Bought the cone from Poland via ebay and lathed up an adapter system and extension to attach to a torquey post hole digger drive.
Unfortunately I was trying to bust up a big root... of hard dry Aussie hardwood
The reason for doing this was the root weighed over two tonnes and was too heavy to crane into my truck with the HIAB . So I drove the cone in on top, sides etc and all I could achieve was some conical holes Ended up having to chainsaw it down to a weight I could lift. Not good for the chain on a dirty stump.

Of course I had seen the Youtube video of a similar device being used to break up stumps in USA or Canada so I thought how hard can it be? Well I think everyone elses timber is soft and brittle compared to our eucalypt hardwood trees. It will probably work OK on some straight grained timber trunks but I haven't needed it since. Must drag it out one day and have another go. Looking forward to your experience Mog.

Well had a go at drilling a few holes in the roots today
But not before I had beefed up the drive with a few triangles as didn’t want it to be the weakest link




However I think my motor maybe a bit too powerful for the cone as after a good start, it screwed in and started to split the wood so whent full depth, brilliant I thought, then moved down the trunk a bit nearer the root,,,,,,,,,,,,, then disaster it screwed the shaft off my adapter

So in conclusion roots are f****ng hard but on the bright side the motor will make a good base for an auger May buy a bigger cone but a bit concerned about it pulling that to bits too

deep vee, weld the cone on Mog and have at it ... can't see yer roots snapping 90mm

That’s the next step V8 nothing to loose
On a side note there was smoke coming from the cone when working so must generate a bit of heat when boring

They get really hot - you won’t hold your hand on one after it’s done a bit of work.

Not yet, had to knock off, but no one will pinch it
Will get it out with my root ripper when I have time, out in the truck now for a few days

I'd have filled that right back to the gussets Mog .... belt, braces and baler twine

Whent and bought this today

A Volvo fh13 520 but chipped to 600 with a 52 ton meter crane fitted
So tomorrow’s job pull the cab wrap off and fit my drawbar hitch, will get the crane and chassis blasted and re painted
