computers were summat from films/science lab.s when I was getting educated ... didn't own one 'til circa 2000, when I bit the bullet and hit the uphill learning curve ... and I'm never gonna catch up ... would love to know enough to be able to 'pop the bonnet'
the same as that my son is an it tech and he laughs when i ask him questions or get him to show me different stuff, its like my brain cant keep up, i get my own back though with mechanical stuff when he comes to me, young kids grasp tech stuff so readily when they are young they are like sponges taking everything in. i think i have a sort of mental lock thinking i am going to fck stuff up. when we got the boys their first computer i could not even set it up my youngest was under ten and had done a bit at school on computers etc, he done it no problems at all, he now is the it go to my tech support.

that was me ..... 'til I discovered the 'back arrow' and realised that it was quite difficult to reeeeeeally cock up. 'Tis poss I know, but 90% of the time things're recoverable ... made a big difference to how 'adventurous' I was from then on.

Yep, exactly my thoughts too, and when you're busy, working on your own machines isn't an efficient way to save (earn) money. You are out earning at hopefully more than he is charging you!
I don't think the rate is unreasonable at £75/hr, and travelling time is fair - I bet like road sweepers, they always seem to be an hour away  but its the game, I get it.
I think you have reason to challenge that he has ramped up the hours a little charging you for his lunch time, but you risk damaging your relationship with him if you push him too hard on this. A good mobile fitter is hard to come by these days.
Its one of those, do you suck it up and keep an eye on him next time or challenge him for £75 and he doesn't work for you anymore.. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't really
Your on £75/hr? 🥵

He’s always skint as well sends invoice then 10 mins later he’s on at you to pay even if you’ve not seen email etc as you’re busy.

Lesson learned, I just assumed it’d be usual hourly not a “job price”

He’s not even that good, he spends hours diagnosing stuff then resorts to trying stuff few times had parts we didn’t need to try sort a problem that @Mick-the-fitter could diagnose off this forum.

@DaveDCB hes from over your way now moved over there, making him way further away.

He’s now in phone as something the censor on here won’t allow lol

I've always worked on 'a pound saved is a pound earned'. Now, granted, I might be able to make a little more on site, but I'm not convinced it's any more profit, and most importantly- if I do a repair, I know it's done right.

Plus it's a good wet day job.
My theory too, however there's a line and the reality is these days I'm better off on a machine than the spanners, and when it's wet I've normally got shitty paperwork to do.

f****ng wanker. Dispute it based upon the hours worked.

He will settle for less and you don’t want him back.

If he’s always skint it sounds like he’s charged you how much he immediately needs rather than how much the job should’ve been 😡

It’s what I do!
Looks like the humble fitters are getting a right pasting😟, knowledgeable ones are few and far between these days, colleges don’t help the new lads, our level three apprentice when asked didn’t know what the piston rings were for!

Experience in a wide range of plant and vehicles is the target for a good fitter, up to date training on new stuff is needed, joining OEMS is best for this, and when something fails don’t just throw it away, strip it, find out how it works and why it broke!

The strip it out and find out all about it is so right ...... then put it all back together without leaving any signs of having been there is good training 🙂
