Mobile plant fitter charges??

Looks to be quite an expensive starter motor by the time he has made his margin on it, charged milage to collect it and charged a fitters rate to do so on top .... triple bubble
I might of course have spent too much time around poor farmers though
Last time I had a starter motor go down on site I phoned our favourite on line supplier at lunchtime and was back to work less than 24hrs later at a cost of £160 Inc vat and delivery...
and that was for an oddball pinion count

Funny thing starter went on the lifton yesterday while out on hire got to it diagnosed and removed in 30 mins new one came form dgf auto this morning fitted in 15 mins and back to work if I had charged for that I probably would have called it an hr plus the starter so £55 plus £130 parts £185 all in

I think this is probably a good example of why we are all in a bit of a crap position in the UK.yes it seems expensive but in reality shouldn't that be about where prices are at ???
In reality it's half a day's work. You aren't really going to get more than one other in. So £600 a day for a skilled self employed mechanic with van and tools ( more often than not including expensive diagnostic kit that has to be paid for regardless of if it's used)
Shouldn't that be a reasonable rate for a tradesmen with all their own kit ??
I know it won't happen but what s/e trades get paid in this country v employed trades is a complete joke.

Personally I don't think it's unreasonable. It may be higher than average. But it's far from unreasonable

I didn't think it was unreasonable either ....the problem is if you can do it yourself you'd prob work sat or whatever to save the money, if it's something you can't do that's a different matter.

I paid 7hrs at £40 for service on the kobelco recently. I have a theory with my guy. He takes my calls and gives me advice when I have issues that I deal with myself. Those 3,5 10mins all add up. And find their way onto the bill somehow. So I don’t complain!!! I don’t want to be the number that he doesn’t want to answer!!
As others have said, £40 an hour is not a great rate for the set up and knowledge!!

Have you asked him about the cost of his invoice.
My old man always said if the customer pays up and says nothing then it's too cheap, if they complain about the price but still pay the price is right, if they don't pay then it must be too dear!
You could say if you knew he was minimum of a day's charge for coming to do works in the future you can try and have enough for a day's work for him when he comes and so everyone everyone knows the score

any body on here know and IT types or software engineers ,or large machinery back up engineers charge ? makes the plant fitter in question a pauper,

some people on here are charging 400 a day for a micro ,i bet the fitters van had more expense in it than a micro
and all a micro can do is dig and level
if your not happy do it yourself .i do,wouldnt even comprehend getting a fitter i for a startermotor

Our IT support co normally charge 1k a day .
We pay about 600 as we pay a monthly retainer....

computers were summat from films/science lab.s when I was getting educated ... didn't own one 'til circa 2000, when I bit the bullet and hit the uphill learning curve ... and I'm never gonna catch up ... would love to know enough to be able to 'pop the bonnet'

To be fair it’s not the sort of thing you ask for someone who has worked for you before and not been unreasonable. I don’t ask my stone supplier every load, my concrete supplier etc

I've always worked on 'a pound saved is a pound earned'. Now, granted, I might be able to make a little more on site, but I'm not convinced it's any more profit, and most importantly- if I do a repair, I know it's done right.

Plus it's a good wet day job.

Yep, exactly my thoughts too, and when you're busy, working on your own machines isn't an efficient way to save (earn) money. You are out earning at hopefully more than he is charging you!
I don't think the rate is unreasonable at £75/hr, and travelling time is fair - I bet like road sweepers, they always seem to be an hour away but its the game, I get it.
I think you have reason to challenge that he has ramped up the hours a little charging you for his lunch time, but you risk damaging your relationship with him if you push him too hard on this. A good mobile fitter is hard to come by these days.
Its one of those, do you suck it up and keep an eye on him next time or challenge him for £75 and he doesn't work for you anymore.. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't really
