I wont work for hourly rate - better to go meet the customer, weigh them and the job up, and give them a price.... only chance you have of making decent money and had some bad experiences in the early years fooking about on a job(having never seen it) without the kit you really need because they said you only need a digger
Only exception nowadays is local authorities who have my rates and we look at job and guesstimate the days.
In that case the rates here are prob 30% - 40% higher than U.K but only in line with what they need to be .... we prob get left with less by the time we are done.

We did work for a irishman once who had brought some land near me..... sent the lad I had working at the time....
£350 for the day including transport... got a load of moaning that rates where s**t in ireland bla, bla.... he gave the lad £200.. Paul rang me and I told him to pocket it and the circle of reality would eventually return.
Pennyless Paddy tried flagging me down a week later when I was in the lorry..... I drove right on past him with the V's Up I work on long term karma.... one day I shall need a 12' gate and posts and I know where there is one.
Actual money wise, if you can't earn £30 a hour with a mini digger you might as well not bother.....

Must be a paddy thing that. Had one try similar with me after digging an extension out but i didn't back down. He tried it with every trade on the job as well and i think ended up needing two or three of every trade by the end. what a load of Bull.... have worked with most nationalities in various places around the world and I can tell you with confidence and experience that there are plenty of British, Indian, Egyptian,Syrian, South African and any other nationality you want to add to that list with wankers who want to rip you off, it’s not an Irish thing.

to be honest I did a lot of day rate but only for decent customers, they knew what they wanted doing and were reasonable with it, quite often I was home for lunch with 10hours signed up with breaker hire(5mins use) made a nice bonus!
Obviously had some prats - work 11 hours they try to pay you for 8hrs(day rate) and argued the day wasn’t over! You don’t forget them idiots!
Best one was we aren’t paying you while you wait for wagons to come back!

The main trouble I have with looking at the job before and giving a price is all the time/ diesel wasters that though it would be £50. You give them a price for the whole job and they freak out. I find on a day rate I more often get the job.
To be honest though I'm only just starting with the digging but I have been pricing up small building work jobs for 15 years.

I've never been bothered with minidigger jobs on price. With the best will in the world the "day jobs" aren't worth driving out and pricing.....£300 a day for me maximum 8hrs and £30/hr after that.

Depends how you organise it ....I only work within 1/2 hour or so of the yard (unless its something tasty) so wait till I have 3 or 4 to look at then nip round in a loop.
Saves that horrible feeling of been sat on the wrong machine and makes more money too.

I enjoy day rate when I'm not doing my own thing. Kit in the van at home time a switch off. Waiting for materials not my problem. Doing something twice because someones cocked up not my problem. Etc etc. Never get rich doing it but it's an easy earner between your own projects
