Very location dependant. Plenty will do it for £200 a day. Don't be a mug, aim for £350 plus.

I’d say that’s about right. Not including lunch break a 7hr working day would be £280. Certainly don’t think it would want to be much less than that unless. So many variables though really.

Think you should be looking at something around £200 for yourself a day and work out what you would need for everything else. Like others have said theres lots of variations. Get what you can.

I would have thought hourly rate would be an exception, too many take the piss so everything is on a price. Maybe while your starting out, save your cash and hire in a machine then add £200-250 on top for your wages and diesel etc.

I started out with operated hire about 3 years ago , year 1 and 2 hiring a machine in , my rates as an average £240.00 micro, £250.00 1.5 ton , £275.00 3 ton.
Year 3 got my own a ecr25d average £300.00 a day now , £45 breaker etc absolutely flat out .
When you start you can only get work really if you are cheap/ cheaper to get people to give you a go then prove yourself .I had to discount those rates a few times to get a foot in the door .
You soon work out which clients you want to keep and you can nudge them up a bit over time.
Depends on your area but here in bucks area good drivers get approx £200.00 a day on contracting add in approx £40 for digger hired in , £20.00 diesel max !
You are on £260.00 and you have not added in your truck trailer insurance cost of running a vechicle so it's hard to make money to start with on hired in option .
You have to enjoy it to make it worth while but once you get going it's great.
You then add in the value you can add supply a dumper , aggregates muck bit of travelling, price work the little Saturday job 3 hrs for a days money etc .
Also depends on what type of work you want do, little domestic , few builders , bit of ag , equestrian ( hard to get paid) alot of ground investigation works by far the best for me , the rates follow that order.
What I found though it really took of when I had my own digger people see the value , top spec machine vs crap hire machine .

Whatever you charge if your going to insist on hourly rate, make it minimum of 8 hour hire, then hourly rate on top.

Am in n Ireland and would never get 40ph here,or you will get no work,have a 13 ton and its 30-35,rates are crap

About 50% more than I can do working 7 days a week. But there's others cheaper than me who aren't flat out. As always, its reputation that earns you the rate, rather than what kit you have.

The only way you'll get rates higher than others in you're area is either if you have a reputation for being v good or rather than going for x amount per hour or day you go see the job and tell them what its gonna cost. I'm not talking really accurately pricing but give them a ball park figure of what it will cost and how long it will take and how much extra a day over. I'm not interested in blind day rate work it's probably the worst thing you can do for you're reputation. I've done it once for a fella all he wanted was me for a day with 3.5 tonner wouldn't tell me what the job entailed but a builder i work with a lot has worked for him so i went to do the day. It was digging founds for a garage and all spoil to lead away to bottom of garden (huge garden). The bit he wouldn't tell me was that he was to cart all spoil with landrover and trailer (non tipper) and drag it off with his micro. Longest day ever never been as bored waiting for him coming back every time. I told him at end of day if he'd told me what was going on I'd have brought dumper for £50 and our 10 hr day would have been done in 4. Fair play to him totally agreed didn't bat an eye paying for full 10 hrs.
Just be careful with the day rate thing it'll get you work and established early days but it's the race to the bottom competing against those who will turn out to lose money on a daily basis.

The vast majority is day rate for me, we turn up, they point, we dig, we get paid.

If it can't be done with machine they have booked then thats their fault and still get charged for day.

Mini/micro goes out on an all in day rate.
Jcb goes out on an 8hour min charge plus travel.
