They did well to get it all on good luck to whoever unloading it. When up close to it counted 3 quads up front, the dumper at least 5 tipping skips, tractor, what ever trailer that is a with a load of wheels plus some actor of some sort. Fair to say it was wobbling aboutreckon DVSA or plod'd take some serious convincing that the traccy hanging off the arse end, by the cleats on its boots, constituted a safe load

First couple pictures are from when I was working on an Oil Sands project they were using a Cat 777 haul truck converted in to a lowbed. At this point it was moving a 90 tonne excavator but could move machines up to Hitachi EX1900 size. The last two lowbeds are fairly typical in Western Canada though there are more companies going with tri-drive tractors and many trailers are of the detachable gooseneck design. The last picture I was transporting a Komatsu PC220LC with a large clean up bucket. That's probably about as much weight that can be hauled on that configuration without a dolly or jeep converter.

An example of a detachable goose neck these guys were called in to replace the copper water line to my brother's house a few years ago. Usually a smaller machine is used for a job like this in Canada but this one was apparently in the 'neighborhood'.

Cat D6 with a snowplow for plowing large drainage ditches on a detachable tri-axle lowbed. I've hauled with these trailers before and didn't like them they are usually around 53' in length and are a pain to around tight street corners. Plus if you detach with some trailers and the road or surface your on is 100% smooth or level it can be hell to get the king pin to lock in.

A couple years ago I was coming down the TransCanada Highway in Southern Saskatchewan and came across this lowbed with a Cat 345 on it, quite the rig!
Then last year I think it was I came across one of the Provincial Government's Amphibex excavators on its dedicated lowbed at a local hydraulics shop. They are used mostly here in Manitoba to break ice on the Red River to prevent ice jams in the spring. I think the Province owns three of them now.

Hard to think this was 12 months ago seems like yesterday, Transformer move with Allelys smallest girder frame and a 180 ton tranny, going up a decent hill outside Bristol the lead truck destroyed a diff and locked up solid, so stuck on a hill we had to bring another truck down to help with the restart and get to site, the diff going was one of those things really you cant plan for it so Allelys keep Diffs on the shelf, Martin and Greg came down and did it on the side of the road.

Ballast truck and its "trailer" are not the "load"
STGO is a can of worms that causes arguments / heated discussion amongst the lads from different outfits that run them all the time so a layman has no chance of being 100% correct
my understanding, bearing in mind I've only ever hauled up to STGO 2 and never more than 1 machine at a time. STGO 1 is up to 50t gross, normal haulage is 44t assuming axle configuration, plating and taxation.
STGO2 up to 80t gross.
STGO 3 up to 150t gross NOTE, there are minimum number of axles required, maximum axle loadings, and speed restrictions when operating within STGO
IF an item of plant puts you into an STGO category you can load a similar item going from same loading place to same delivery place provided it doesn't take you above the initial catergory and doesn't increase the width or length of the original load.
The question up for debate most often is that if an item can be moved within normal C & U regs then it should be, so how does 2 off 13t exc become a legal move on STGO?

Some more pictures of our transportpanzer as I like calling it. It's not a true lowbed as its on a pintle hitch. We can transport either the 160 or the 210. But the 210 is only legal on certain highways. It doesn't help that Clint put the useless thumb back on either increasing its gvw. He did however get the box re-painted this summer.

seeing that tractor hanging of the arse of the trailer made me think. What are the rules on this ?
When I move the digger I have the arm folded so the hitch is on the blade but the knuckle and boom do stick out the back a good 6 feet. I tie a spare high viz to it for blind drivers but often wondered what the 'official' word on overhang is ?

3ft un marked ...... 10ft suitably marked, to rear of vehicle's extremity .... triangular marker board .... from memory IIRC it's 5ft out front

Daewoo 20 tonnes got foam filled tyres plated at 44 but on that trip must of been 48-50 the truck empty weighs 26 tonswhat're you plated to @Mogman ? ...... Dai woo's a good 17+t on his own
