Lorry Carrying Capacity

Can anyone advise on the maximum carrying capacity of a rigid beaver tail lorry for 13 tonne excavator haulage? Most 13 tonne excavators are now well over that weight and we are looking at a few options. Does this mean a low loader would be required or are there rigid lorries out there that will carry one? A lot of our jobs have right access and a low loader would struggle to get in.

I see no reason why you can't put one on an 8 legger, probably a 6 legger too.

A 6 legger will normally carry a 13t but you might struggle to take more than one bucket with you within the weight

Depends on the machine, our js130hd is 15800kg minus buckets and muck etc, if it’s a genuine 13000kg er might have more options

6 wheelers sit at a payload of between 12 and 16t depending on spec they vary greatly as per body length and axle configuration (My Foden will carry 17t in theory, a mates scania is at 13t as it has widdle girly axles and a crane)
8 legger should carry around 19-20t depending on spec.

Modern 8 wheelers are all too heavy, I don’t think I know of any 8 wheelers around here that can carry 20t. Maybe there’s some ally bodied ones, but few and far between. Anything with a steel muck body is too heavy. Although the bodies have got lighter and the trucks have got heavier!

local firm here used to pride themselves on running true 20t muck away trucks, not anymore..... had Scania for years, decades even, but rumour has it that Volvos are on order.....

Even the new concrete wagons only carry between 7.5/7.7 cube now!

An 8 wheel beaver tail would easily carry a 13 tonner and set of buckets
As said some 6 wheelers might carry the weight depending on body but the vast majority only have 7 tonne front axles so make it very difficult to get the machine loaded correctly as you either need the boom over the van making them very high
Or the boom stuck out the back requiring marker boards
Plus unless your load positioning is perfect they handle like a pig, an 8 wheeler is far more forgiving on load positioning

Thanks for all the replies. We have someone that moves out machine at the minute, but a lot of firms seem to have a hiab on the lorry too so that obviously reduces the carrying capacity quite a bit. A lot of the 13 Tonners seem to be in a similar region weight wise so we will just find the best firm to carry it and the buckets

Mate runs a 8 leg Scania with demountable beaver tail and barn door tipper...seems to work well...takes his 312 happily but it's pretty high up...exciting to load🙂

An alloy body and ours wouldn't be to far off 20t
Our old man 6w if it had an alloy body would carry 17t but before we had to reline the floor the steel body you could get 16.6t now only 16.2t

My 6 wheeler with a front crane tares at 16t, carries 10t:(
Any crane fitted and you carry the next class lorry down tonnage happens to grab waggons but pay for the next size up
So 6w carries a 4w standard load but charges for a standard 8w load 😵

It a hydraulic beavertail, in that the whole beaver tail comes up to make a flat, it works well for the work I do, its the second one I`ve had since a fixed bevertail. It will have to be an 8 wheeled next time new trucks are not getting any lighter.

Could you not opt for double flip ramps
Still gives a flat bed when folded but less going on under the bed so should make it lighter
Plus supposedly the most fuel efficient setup. I know someone who swapped his low loaders from single fold ramps to double and saved 1-2mpg
