Another mate has a tractor-mounted one of these that he is very pleased with (and he does a lot of logs) - clever idea as no wasted stroke. I think it is very fast if operated by a couple of people, but that is potentially asking for trouble...

I’m holding back and hoping @Mogman gets into firewood (or at least needs to split himself a couple of tonnes for some reason or other) - I’m fairly sure he would create something fast, sharp and dangerous that takes no prisoners!!!

Unless running off pto digger far superior for running splitter off if aux line has detent mode (constant pump) just got to be careful as hydraulic pressure on a digger is higher than tractor so cheaper splitters won't last.
Hence the now homemade splitter as the only bit worth saving was the ram and valve. It is two handed mind 🤣View attachment 19368
thats upside down compared to mine sit in digger and work it from there no manhandling can even grip and split over trailer if needed surprising how quick and easy when you get into the way of it -I will post some pictures at weekend if I am using it

Very easy thing to overcomplicate and ime overcomplicating a log splitter is just building weaknesses in. Another thing I've learned is metal fatigue comes into play if used a lot. Mine was a bought one which was a lot lighter built than it is now and after 12/13 years use it was cracking and bending for fun (tbh it was a miracle it lasted that long). Ultimately its a ram on a beam or lump of box.

I recently bought a 22T ES Log Splitter from Rock Machinery. £1500 inc vat. It is meant for the horizontal use only due to some EU law that was meant to be coming into place apparently but got scrapped. However its just a case of not wiring up the micro switch. It works in both positions. Its been great! Its a very powerful splitter. Pic below is when it arrived. I looked at making my own originally, but I just couldn't make it for the money this was plus the time I would waste doing it.

Benefit of this is, its got it's own engine and doesn't rely on anything else to power it.

Highly recommended! Plus their customer service is great!

This is one I built for myself about 2 years ago, it does its job nicely. I might built myself another soon as I have a few ideas..... that said I have a log splitter, a whole load of trees to cut, and lately I have been buying blocks from the local garage at £3.50 a bag😣
I feel a Saturday of sawing coming on🙂

IMHDO that's not a bad price for that .... a lot of work and bits in there and being self contained's a serious bonus
