Lifton 6 Ton Swivel Skip with Shuttle Problem

Dear Members
I have what I think is a Lifton 6 Ton Dumper, there is no plate to be found, but it has a flat top Perkins engine.

The shuttle drive was prone to acting up, and for a while only worked in forward.

It has lying out in the weather, and now there's neither forward nor reverse.

The shuttle drive switch stalk on the steering column is a mess, but I've checked for current at both connector on the top of the gearbox and there is nothing.

I've tried tried a wire direct from the positive side of the battery to both connectors on the top of gearbox, but I don't hear any action from the solenoids.

Does the fact that there are two wires in each connector mean that it requires both positive and negative supply, because the unit on the top of the gearbox is plastic?

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

The gearbox is similar to the photo, but probably much older since the top plastic tank has two push on plug connectors, where the red round plastic covers are in the photo.

Having unscrewed the dash panel, in an effort to find fuses, I can't find any in any convenient location, and I image it a fusebox wouldn't be hidden out of sight.

To recap, dumper starts easily, and steering, skip swivel, raise, and lower, all working, but no shuttle drive.

Having removed the cover of the shuttle switch stalk, on left side of steering wheel, there doesn't appear to be any current at the switch.

It’s what I do!
They supply to those can be done either way dependent on manufacturer run a live to both and a switched earth to each one and see what happens, don’t switch both on at the same.time!

let's have some pix of the dumper itself Derek as you're not sure it is a Lifton

It’s what I do!
Pics always good, I remember in the old days going to dumpers that people had bought as a Thwaites! But we’re actually benford, barford or RJE?

If there is no power at the forward/ reverse switch could it be that the inching pedal switch has gone open circuit?

Hello Steve,

Where is the inching pedal switch that you refer to?

I've pulled apart all the wiring loom plug and sockets behind the dash panel, and given all a good dose of contact cleaner to no avail.

I've even tackled the earth points back there.

in those looms I can identify the Brown & Brown/White, and the Brown & Brown/black wires for the plugs on top of the gearbox, but at this stage, since the only thing working on the dumper (electrical) is the starter and alternator, so perhaps I'd be better off to create and new supply to the gearbox pluds, and mount a new two position switch on the frame just left of the steering column.

On that note could someone sketch me a simple schematic to create a new supply, which presumably will only have the positive supply through the switch, and two negatives going to the shuttle plugs on the gearbox.

I could cut the two 2 wire Brown& Brown/White, and Brown & Brown/black from the loom in the vicinity of the gearbox and use those?

we still haven't confirmed whether your notion of the identity of this dumper is correct or not @Derek

I am not familiar with your dumper so I don’t even know that it has an inching pedal switch but have a look at the base of the left pedal usually near the pivot. Other things to check would be operator present switch on the seat which may cut power to the forward reverse switch so that it can’t be driven unless you are seated , also check hand brake off switch. Don’t start chopping the loom as I doubt you have a serious problem with the wiring.

If there was a switch under the seat, it has long ago been removed, and there is no switch on the handbrake lever.
