Is the backhoe loader a thing of the past?

Seriously considering something like this(CAT310), wouldn’t go tilty as it’s more of a muscle machine for me, site clearance/reduce dig/stone up etc.. my 6ton can breathe a little bit then and go back to doing the jobs it was intended for.. but for the money I’m sure a near new 13t could be had 🥴View attachment 73610
i know the local finning rep a bit and when asked him about the 310 price wise it was exactly between the 8 and 13 ton. Which I didn’t think was ridiculous 🤷🏻‍♂️

i fancy one tbh as it’s a bit lighter moving with the tractor, I’d love to get one at the side of dads zx110 to see what they’re like

Those cats have the worst paint job I've ever seen on a machine. A contractor who I bought one of my Taks off has all cat. The 309 (9 tonner) in the yard was a year old and literally had paint just peeling off it, not a primer layer in sight . Cat were apparently going to respray it but what a joke for a supposed premium brand .

I’m not done yet Doob, I just don’t currently have one.
And I’m definitely done with Avants! They can go to hell😆 Even managed to get through an entire Chelsea without driving one and my temper is all the better for it
Soo if your work doesn’t lend its self to one why put yourself through the pain of another…? 🤔

Wacker at 6.2t doesn't give much up to my kub 8.3t - sure for bulk sort of stuff kubota had more tearout and did better esp as no tilty etc but not enough of a jump and on lighter work wacker pisses all over it with quicker cycle times etc.
If I needed bigger it would be looking at 13/14t ton bracket 👍 any bigger than that and they put you to sleep at the seat ;)
Proctor has often things that would be just the ticket at not a lot of money

That cat looks nice

I’d want a blade and zero tail if going into a 13ton, which makes it harder and more expensive to find!

When diggers are more of a hobby than a necessity things seem to get expensive 😂
I've been on a job recently where they had an ec140e and an ecr145e blade runner, which I had to operate. Both decent and drove as well as I remember the b and c version doing. According to the plate the ecr145 was around 16.5t

I've been down this road recently trying to help a friend who was looking to buy a 13 tonne for around £20k. Wanted a blade, thumb controls on aux etc. we found a few older machines at his budget and went and had a look- one thing in common they were all rough as f**k and needed alot of work. Multiple rollers shot, wobbling slew rings, mega hrs. I came to the conclusion it might look like you can get a lot of machine for your money in this size but really to get anything decent the budget has to be increased considerably. £35k plus to get something half decent

Exactly this, plant can look ‘alright’ in photos, but get up close to it and it’s never any better! I’m the fussiest person going, so the task is long and arduous!

Wow that's really bad. Chatted to a long time owner op the other day when buying a lovely old bucket he had for sale. He'd been on the same site for 15 years🤯 Was out at £40/hr dry hire. Bought a new machine every 5ish years. If you're already setup in life I guess it earns you a living but not much more.
As he said though, they do pay every day rain or shine so he takes the slightly less rate for the more long term work. 15 Years on one job is a long time, he's never even had his Pro model out of 3rd gear😆
I think they need to be £55/hr now with fuel minimum. You can easily justify more but it has to be the right work or you're pulled down against an 8 tonner and a dumper on ball busting UK hire rates and an agency driver who doesn't turn up.
£55 hour is just ridiculous.most of us must be on nearly that for 2.5/3 ton machines.ive not had a backhoe since 2009 and not had a call for one since.when i started full time with my avatar it was costing a pound a clock hour for tyres and I was on £17 in 2001.backhoes need to be at least £70 but ill agree people dont want to pay.getting fewer and fewer about these days and not many ops who are any good on them either.i dont know what the answer is.just seems a big race to the bottom
