Ineos Grenadier

Has anyone else been following the development of this?
When they first started talking about, it sounded an ideal candidate when I came to change vehicles next, I`m was looking at moving from a double cab pick up to a 4x4 van, Toyota land cruiser van looked OK, not too many frills (which is what I wanted), but had a poor towing weight. With not much else on the market I`ve been following the development of this, getting drip fed bits of info as they come available, 3.0l bmw 6 cylinder engine, ZF transmission, proper chassis and so on, while no price but saying it will be competitive.
Yesterday the exterior design was reviled.
Hmmm  I know the is only so much you can do with a square boxy shape, but I was hoping for something that would have its own identity, rather than a LR copy, the rear doors look an improvement over a defender, and it looks to be a bit wider, a bit more elbow room maybe?
The price, competitive? I was thinking mid £20`s - mid £30`s, reading an article yesterday, in autocar I think, No firm price given yet but ineos said it would begin with a "4" and would have a N1 category = commercial vehicle, so that will be plus vat.
At that price it would seem to be a bit high for a no frills work truck.
Any one else been following it, and got any thought`s

There is a Facebook article on professional pickup page saying starting price is 35 grand

Hopefully that is right, as I think 40 is too much for a work truck.
I apologise it was auto express not auto car, I was reading yesterday about the price.

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/ineos...enadier-4x4-revealed-take-land-rover-defender
"On pricing, we understand that at today’s prices the Grenadier would start with a four. However, with a classification of N1, it will officially be a commercial vehicle, so VAT will have to be added. That means a total starting price potentially close to £50,000 for those who can’t claim the tax back through their business"

You would have to be insane.

This alone is enough to scream avoid

Similarly, head of design Toby Ecuyer started his career as an architect, and more recently has been designing super yachts. “If you can design one thing, you can design another,” he said. “So, if you can design a toaster well, I think you can design a car really well, too. I think it’s more to do with your designing principles than anything else. But I think it does have benefits.”

From my brief look it doesn't seem to be anyone there with a background in commercial vehicles or even offroaders, so just throwing a load of design cues of other vehicles and somehow hoping it either won't drive like a bag of nails or actually be any good

I know what your saying, I believe a lot as been developed with magna steyr, home of the G wagen and Pinzgauer, so you would like to think someone there knows about light commercial off roader though.
That last film with him saying about toasters, and the price talked about makes me think need to keep looking for a replacement vehicle. Luckily I not in a rush to change.

Just have to make do with a Jap pickup as far as I can see, everything else is too damn expensive for work.

Looks more like it was designed for posh city twats than workers. Being classed as a work vehicle will just be a tax dodge. Also side hung doors are bloody annoying when you have a trailer.

I`ve got a feeling your right on that. Might of started for workers, but found they can make more money as an SUV type vehicle.
One of the articles says you can open just the small door, got to be better than a defenders middle door?

Been following it with interest....I hope it does turn into something good but something tells me it might be a dead duck...

Can't see Landrover taking it sitting down...talk about blatant? I mean if it was a chink firm we'd be all going mad?

Probably aimed at people with a nostalgic draw towards the discontinued defender.
Problem is, it probably started off as a well intentioned thing but has escalated, the price pretty much kills it's for the utility market.
From reading up a bit more about it, they seem to be on the right track focusing on 4x4 capabilities but there is equally crappy bits.

The biggest issue their supposed core market have pretty much all Donald ducked off and got pickups at half the cost.

Landrover dropped that shape for a couple of reasons, the cost to adapt/change to meet crash safety but mostly as they have turned their back on their utility background.

At 40k for something that looks like an '86 defender with some bolt on bits, with little to no dealer backup is just flat out mental

to be fair if some one jlr asked any defender fan how can we make the defender better you could do worse than a strait 6 from bmw should run for years, a 6 speed auto box from zf , lets make it a wee bit wider to give you a bit more elbow room, cerroro axels, coil springs, ladder chaise what's not to like. just drop all the steel bits in the galvanising tank and keep you pencil sharp I would be putting my name down for one

wouldn't really need to make it much wider, they could just narrow that box in-between the seats and move the seats closer to the centre.
As for BMW engine they don't really make any sort of commercial and giving how some of their engines have quite bad failures in a road car it would be interesting to see how they would cope under the tougher conditions off road

ok may be I would have gone with a cummings rather than a bmw but I don't spose we can have it all

Put simply they've seen an opportunity to rape a load of cash from die hard land rover defender fans. At the same time they've bought into land rovers own mentality that there's more profit to be made from Chelsea tractors than working vehicles. Its not exactly a surprise is it.

There are decent utility vehicles already made it just doesn't make financial sense to import them here
In reality a simple utility vehicle would have to sell for 15k when you can buy a decent spec Navara or dmax for 20k
I don't really understand how there is such a big luxury pickup market allowed to occur by the government when we have all these green rules being forced down our throats but the UK tax system practically encourages people to buy pickups when they have no need for them
I would say I don't mind as in years gone buy it's given me a nice selection of old trucks to buy but the trucks being sold now are such poor quality they are never gonna be running by the time they reach me
I just wish you could go and buy a brand new early 2000 ford or Toyota and be safe in the knowledge it's got the best part of 20years of life left
But the general public think heated seats and a lipstick mirror are more important in a pickup
