Reminds me of when I was on holiday as a kid. Our friends Volvo snapped the throttle cable so found a bit of baler twine in the boot and connected that up through the window to get home

When it gets as bad as that the chain really needs to be changed along with the sprockets or the new sprockets will get prematurely knackered
