With regards to a grab/grapple it's often the 1st thing I use when I get to a job and fitted when I leave the job. I use it enough to see it as essential. A hydraulic one with q/hitch would be nice and convenient(y)

hydraulic thumb would be a workable compromise perhaps .... possibly even more versatile

I can’t have a thumb as you cannot weld to the dipper on the new Takeuchi 216 it’s a real shame as I had one on my 016 and it was great

probably HT steel ..... technique would be to put a spreader plate on, to take the loading out to the existing welds at the sides and taper any of the cross welds with a lozenge-ish shaped plate .. it'd probably void any warranty though :(

I .might wait for the end of the warranty period if I didn't know any better. Can't see any other reason unless it's to do with a specific metal type

install some/plenty of riv-nuts and bolt a good sized plate on to spread the loading

it's probably made from 50B which has a higher tensile strength than 'bobby basic' 43A used in general fab work .... 50B is/(was) most often used for bucket bodies ... 'til everyone started using 55

"Grade 43 is the basic steel grade commonly available. ... The current steel design standard BS5950-1:2000 uses a different terminology to specify steel grades.Grade 43 is now known as S275, grade 50 is S355, and grade 55 is S460. These are based on the design strength of the material. "

Could be a load of bollocks the dealers are spinning out too. We had a repair to do on a log max harvesting head he had on his Tigercat harvester, he was told it couldn't be repaired as it was a special grade of steel, oh and they wouldn't give us the privilege of knowing what the grade was. We had nothing to loose so we lopped a bit off and sent to a lab at Zurich for testing and they sent us a certificate saying S275. We did the repair with some hardox 400 and it outlasted every other head he knew of in the area. They could be trying to make out its something special but maybe its not. I'm sure it's a fully welded assembly already so can't see why it can't be welded a bit more:unsure:

Also running a powertilt so a thumb grab wouldn’t really work

Could you fit a tractor top link in place of the fixed bar the swivel balls at the end would give you some degree of movement when combined with a tipt hitch

Yeah, that sort of works for a grapple. I’ve tried it before. Main problem with the tilt hitch and a grapple is the stack height makes the grapple action very snappy with not a lot of power. Op would be best with a hydraulic grab if he can find one. Or do as I do and run the tilt hitch under a normal
Q/h when needed.
