Get it spotlessly clean if your going to mig it cut a nice big v turn the volts all the way up and spray it in.

Most people don't like mig for big stuff because they use a small set that doesn't have enough juice or don't have it hot enough
Pretty big unit Druid has the same, forgot what the mig unit is but I’ve sent pics to Druid before.

Now to get Gra going... for a start I hadn’t looked at the photo properly, but I would park the MIG and get the stick out. 3.25 mm 7018’s top to toe, root 120A, fill runs 125. Grind the slag out of the corners between runs. For something like that bar, I’ve found 7018 to be a lot more ductile than ER70 wire and less likely to crack later. So you’ve now got two options if you can MIG and stick. Whichever route you go, a bit of preheat will help, but don’t get it too hot between runs. Certainly don’t bang your next run in while it’s glowing orange or red, let the colour go out of the weld.

just a PITA pratting about keeping it clean and inclusion free when it'd MIG up in ten minutes with Giles' Lincoln Ranger 10 LX and Hobart Hefty wire feeder ... also a bit tight to get the grinder in to keep the slag out of it :( ...... either way ..... he's gonna break it again :ROFLMAO:

Haha, I only broke it so I could practice on it lol

You’ll find 15% carbon dioxide shielding gas rather than the normal 5% will help keep a hotter weld pool too. Always worth keeping a bottle around.

I’m with Druid, 10 minute job with mig.

I don't mean to be pedantic but what you guys are talking about is actually MAG welding. Metal Active Gas. Only called MIG when using Metal Inert Gas 🤪

Air Products used to do a 15% , place I get them now does 15% also, but I’m beginning to wonder if they are actually blending the gas correctly.....
