Very nice.

I've deliberated buying a 6w a few times...I've just been spoiled by my 4w carrying 10t.
My mates just bought an man 6w and only carries 11.5t.
The very first grab I ever drove was a 56 plate daf 6w and that was a 12.5t pay load.

Don't get me wrong, you can easily put more on.

With that crane setup I wouldn't be surprised if that was around the lower end of your weights.
But then the last 4 wheel grab I drove would only carry 8t. Was a pig of a thing made for rubbish clearance. Incredibly long wheel base with a 14.5tm crane and full depth body.

Yeah, most 4w are around 8.5t with standard (off the shelf) body and crane.

As always custom build helps but the gains in extra payload aren't worth it.

2nd hand 4w command a premium over any 6w grab...so I'd probably go the 6w route when mine is no longer viable to keep going.

I can't understand why as most 6w grabs have the same overall length as a 4w but essentially the extra axle mounted in the middle giving them a tighter turning circle

Mines way shorter I'd also say most are shorter too.

But I'd say you can bend a 6w into most places you'd get a 'premium' for cos you've got a 4w.

I suppose it depends where you are. We don't really have the awkward access and small lanes around here so 2 6 wheelers and of the 3 4 wheelers, 2 are owned by groundworks firms and only 1 is a muck away firm.
And Im talking about an area where 1 local village has 5 muck away firms running 8 wheelers In it.

I did a few runs in a friends 6w MAN grab before Christmas, it’s a lot of truck but only 12 t payloads,if you’re getting 10 on 18 tonner, almost seems pointless going to a 6.The MAN is a lovely smooth truck though, real eye opener for me regarding modern wagons.

You won't get that 10t on a newer lorry. You can instantly take off 1t for emissions equipment and safety equipment. Then look at the crane, any newer crane would have safety cutouts meaning you would need to go up a couple of crane sizes to achieve the same as hiluxmans atlas. And I think from older posts hiluxmans crane is single extension, obviously more extensions are more weight.
For those uninitiated in cranes the reason I posted the lorry is it an odd ball setup. Most grab lorries run epsilon cranes that are really fast but don't have much lift capacity. You have to drag the loaded bucket across the floor until it's close enough to pick up. The crane above is a heavy lift crane. It will be slower but capable of being used as a proper hiab crane if you want to lift steels or concrete panels in. It also has a remote control for the crane so it would lend itself better to someone wanting to run their own lorry as part of a building/groundworks business, than a normal set up.

Yeah prity much. I've also Ali sides too.
I'd never get a new 4w grab to have the same capacity, hence why when mines no longer viable to keep on the road I'll be looking for a 6w.

Also like you say epsilon cranes are good from a speed point of view. But the last one I had a go with wouldn't lift my e10, where as with my old atlas it does it easily and you can almost go full stretch too.

But while ever I can keep the old girl going then I will, she will be 21 years old in a few week.

The daf I have posted has a hiab 144. I have used the same crane, albeit older with a more primative lockout system, and I should think you would be able to pick up a 2t machine and load it into the back depending on how much the newer cutouts affect it.

My mates got an epsilon,2 extensions it’s very smooth even with me snatching at the levers🤪,but it does overload/lockout really easily which you would get used too,but could be a pig liftong kit over walls etc.
