Engcon UK
The Noble Art of Digging
We’ve not posted installations on the new forum as the old CE forum generally didn’t like too much spam from manufacturers; but since Tom’s postings over the weekend and the generally positive reactions to them I hope we can add to the debate and spread product awareness by adding a few other recent installations. Feedback, as ever, is always important and if there’s something that members would like to hear more (or less
) about then please let me know.
We’ve been wanting to do something like this since I joined the company four years ago. The backhoe loader is a machine that retains a lot of affection within the digging community and Robin Webber – the owner – has generously allowed us to showcase how Engcon can transform a machine – not just with the tiltrotator, but with our full arsenal of goodies, including twin-hitch EC-Oil, top and bottom, steering and auxiliary control and much, much more.
The 4CX in this form is an impressive beast - full servo controls, a dig depth going on 5m and four wheel drive and four wheel steer. However, one of the drawbacks on the backhoe is the need to be facing the loading shovel when you want to reposition the machine. Similarly, it’s not possible to operate the loading shovel when facing backwards or the backhoe when you are looking at the steering wheel. Whilst the Extradig function is joystick operated, the Powerslide is not and you can’t steer and fully operate the loading shovel at the same time. The rear stabilisers are separate switches designed to be operated in rear-facing mode. Putting all of this functionality on the joysticks, able to be operated from any position as well as adding joystick steering and forward, neutral and reverse gear functions means the backhoe becomes a much more functional and capable tool.
An additional accelerator pedal and brake pedal have been incorporated into the flat floor underneath the rear window, although these have an interlock on them which disables the functions when the seat is facing forwards (Robin’s dog accompanies him).
In this case it’s a twin hitch installation because Robin wanted to use a breaker and dig narrow deep trenches. The tilty can also be swapped over to the 85Z-1 when his son Andrew can get his hands on it.
Road speed in joystick steering mode is limited to under 20km/hr
