That's when you can take it to the extreme and refurbish the cars, it has been suggested by a few firms but shot down in flames, have the body shell last 20+ years and most the unrecyclable plastics such as dash and all the actuators for seats and boots be designed for a longer lifespan
But have a drivetrain that can be upgraded easily. And quickly.
How can we push for green then throw away a tonne of plastic every few years. It's just as unsustainable as carbon emissions.
It maybe is but looking at the bigger scheme ie govt/country economy it's a balance between being green and keeping huge amounts of money going round between countries. Buying a car and keeping it going for 25 year doesn't do economies any good

It could have the potential to depending on where the parts are sourced and how the service plans are worked.
We currently rely on humans want for new things to drive the car industry.
All that would happen is changing the route in which the money's extracted.
And it will come.
After all hardware is becoming worth less and less
It will be the software that we end up paying for in one way or another.

Be interesting to see what if any difference these electric vans have to allow them an extra tonne gvw. Bet the chassis is the same probably the brakes are to? Makes a mockery of prosecuting people upto 1t overweight in same size diesel vehicle.

The lithium bit is under very close scrutiny by the mining guys down here as most are geologist's and other than one mention in one book from hundreds of years ago that might have been a miss labeling of something else they found
It's a lot of cash cow share holder stunt pulling to pull in millions over just one lithium word printed in that book
If they do find it and workable quantities then I will take my hat off to them but think it's a bit of good old snake oil

The tin and copper side that's trying to resume now that's worth it due to we have higher grades than rest of the world and still plenty left in the ground and will be a welcomed boost to Cornwall

They allow up to 4.25t gvw. But it not as clear cut as you would hope,


"1.2 The Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) (Amendment) Regulations 2018 (the 2018 Regulations) made changes to the law to allow Category B licence holders to drive an alternatively fuelled vehicle that weighs between 3.5 and 4.25 tonnes, provided it is not driven outside of Great Britain, used for the transportation of goods, is not towing a trailer and the driver has completed a minimum of 5 hours training"

"2.7 Vehicles that are alternatively fuelled by natural or liquefied gas or electricity and carry goods within a 100 km radius of the company base, and do not exceed 7.5 tonnes (maximum authorised mass) including the mass of a trailer are exempt from the EU Drivers rules Regulation."
Contradicting themselves over trailers :unsure:

4.5 Whereas a driver who holds a Category C licence including sub categories (and therefore also a category B licence) who undertakes the additional training is permitted to drive alternatively fuelled vehicles weighing up to 4.25 tonnes without coming into scope for Driver CPC"

well that's as clear as mud ..... WTF is going to drive a 4.25t vehicle that isn't for towing or carrying goods? (presumably that'd include one's own goods) ..... and as for 5 hrs of training o_Oo_O

I think its ok carrying goods, but no trailer,
up to 100km radius then tacho,
MOT test in a hgv test site,
Speed limiter,
and training unless you hold a C, C+E, or C1 and a DCPC

I read it as (only) used for the transportation of goods (not used for personal use)

I did consider a cng iveco daily a while back, taking advantage of the increased gvw (I think they where 4.2t), the gas gear put around 200 odd kgs to the tare, giving nearly half a ton payload advantage over the diesel version.
It didn't take long to go off the idea when, it was over double the price of a diesel, no where to fill it up (nearest 44 & 52 miles away) , and couldn't tow a trailer (due to this relaxation of the regs)

aye CNG network is worse than crap ......
at least LPG was a lot more widely available (3 within 6 miles of me) ....
interesting that LPG isn't mentioned in that exert from HMG's latest BS release ....... would be interesting to know whether they are including Liquified Petroleum Gas in there or just CNG which also falls into the liquified category ...
(a CNG tank is about 3 times the weight of and LPG tank -- much thicker as it works at MUCH greater pressure to liquify the NG ... Propane becomes liquid at 9-12+ bar - CNG is 250 bar. a kilo of LPG becomes 270 ltrs of gas ... kilo of CNG becomes 100ltr and CNG has no where near the calorific value of propane)

If they are anything like the Tesla model 3 (other versions probably the same) the brakes don't really get used as the motors do majority of the work. When a friend bought one he enquired into how long the brakes will last and what sort of servicing to be told see you in a few years

reference braking, you almost dont need them, the motors can free wheel as well as recoup energy back into the batts which gives a feeling of engine braking. Theres 3-4 different modes

Infact reading the manual, when you brake it actually used the motors first and the brakes second... Makes sense as the brakes are certainly different
