Something you don't wanna overlook with range is all the other stuff in the car robbing battery life. Radio heater lights wipers on in winter you ain't going as far.

Weight is gonna be the big issue for commercial vehicles. The 40kwh battery in a nissan leaf weighs about 260kg. How many of those is a pickup and trailer gonna need to cover any distance let alone a truck. Interestingly there's as much energy in 4 litres of diesel/petrol as there is in a 40kwh battery although admittedly an internal combustion engine is fairly inefficient so you need to burn a bit more fuel than that to get 40kwh worth out of it. It does imho highlight how to be greener on one hand you do have to be highly inefficient with the other. Ultimately uk govt has signed us up to some unachievable global emissions carry on which is what's driving this.

yeh have seen them .... think I put a link up to them some time ago ... might even have been on the CEF can't imagine ripping a V8 out of a 928 in favour of a washing machine motor

a fair point that I have banged on about for a long time ..... mid winter and it's lashing down ... wipers, heater, lights, boom box, etc. ......... gonna be lucky to get home !!

Yes, but it's a job spinner as well. The employment realised in the whole renewable market the past few years has been huge, from wind farms and turbine manufacturing to cars, chargers, solar panels and heat pumps. Jumping on this green bandwagon will be the new horizon that keeps the UK out of a Brexit recession.

Just look at the 4,000 new jobs announced today from Nissan for a new battery factory and all the associated supply chain jobs that go along with it.
Is it any surprise the government has refused to divulge how much grant incentive they've ploughed into this to make it happen.

been the same for years though ... take the grants, token compliance and then leg it .... LG in Newport are a classic example .... Aston'll be the same - already is to a degree

Sharon has a Toyota Yaris Hybrid from nearly new
Zero road tax and no range anxiety.
Don’t think the UK have the charge infrastructure in place yet to go fully electric
We love the Yaris and would have another one in a heartbeat.
But our next one will be a Hybrid PHEV of some description

been trying to get back to this all evening Dave ..... the no tax on these really bugs me ..... zero VED cos you can do 30 miles on yer batteries.
Anyone who forked out £1500-2k to convert their vehicle to LPG, in order to get the same zero VED had to completely remove the fuel tank AND the fuel system AND have it inspected and cert.ed as such ..... that's a really fair incentive, eh? .....
no one spending that wedge is going to voluntarily continue to run petrol regularly ...
it was a massive disincentive to encouraging LPG use ....
and with mere lip service initially paid by HMG toward encouraging its use and then further disincentivising roll out, by slashing all the tax concessions on the fuel, it's no wonder it died a death ......
an LPG fuelled vehicle is far, far cleaner than yer leccy chariot .. taking into account the C footprint producing all that leccy creates ---- and we won't even mention the C footprint of battery production.

see the other night one of the motors being advertised needed a 350KW station for a rapid charge ... which doesn't appear to exist then ?

'bout time ... get all the donkey boxes off the road ..... have said before a local Giles has binned his stock lorry and now drags a sodding gert stock trailer around behind a humongous JD, travelling 40-50 miles with it to some markets/abattoirs .. real legal that !!

It’s not as much as that 150kw is plenty. And 30 mins it’s done. There are more
150kw than you think. Also with free charging at some places such as Tesco . Although that’s 7kw I think which is the same as a home supply

do any leccy chariots have a decent towing ability and how badly does it decimate their range ??

Hybrid Defender will yank 3t, but imo out of towners that need to tow for work don't fit the leccy profile! Looks like pickups maybe our niche I hate to say or its hybrids as a token gesture.

Think new Ranger is getting decent hybrid.
And rumoured a nice V6 turbo..
One thing that's not discussed is the long term aspect? I for one wouldn't dare own hybrid/leccy out of warranty.... So in short they become disposable..?

I looked into electric vans couple of months ago. They have an allowable gvw of like 4 or 4.5t to make up for battery on normal license. You basically just cannot get the figures to stack up. Too pricey. You get all the same tax breaks on a diesel commercial. That's one reason why you see loads of pick ups and tricked up VW transporters. This whole thing as has been said is being driven by tax. Missus mate swapping her company car to hybrid, bam 300 extra take home wages each month! No bik and if you get vat back they are a good deal for companies.. fair play @Regy53 treat yourself. I don't think I've ever spent 8k on a motor let alone 80 lol I'm a simple guy.

Yes, tbh I have had a few nice cars in my time but I always came back to my trusty ranges , I have had one 4 years now out of 5, my man math seemed silly but incredibly it made sense purely from tax, 100 quid a month net spend. I would love a pick up but there to bouncy for me and I really wouldn’t use it for it’s intended purpose. I did buy a 2020 Dodge Ram but decided it wasn’t for me. Lovely car though

The chev is actually fine though , not a daily. And look at what you got in the late 80s . A light on a wind up wire in the engine bay

We have a bmw m140 as mrs car but she does 2000 miles a year at best, we’ve been looking at electrics. My mate has Tesla model 3 performance let me have a drive, Christ on a bike the acceleration when you gun it makes you feel funny. Wedges you back in the seat and keeps going.

but they’re expensive £56k or so
