Easy start?

Is it a bad idea? I've been using a squert of brake cleaner to get my dumper going. It works a treat but the first couple combustions have a different more pronounced crack sound to them. Is it likely to bugger it up?

Nothing wrong with Ether, but it's very much a moderation thing. Your putting a bit too much in if you've got a crack and it will cause issues.

hate the stuff .... but Cummins fitted canisters of ether to their diesels for cold starting .. V504, V555, 240, 260 & 290 that i know of/have personal experience of

I don’t know as it’s addictive, more likely you use it because it’s hard to start and then never address the underlying problem.

NO .... the fkn engines get so addicted to it they won't start in the height of summer without it

sorry ... disagree ... they get dependent on it ..... just takes longer with a smaller snifter ....... you can't beat a flame down the inlet on a cold morning

No personal experience, but I was warned off it.
The story was that the preignition hammers the hell out of the big-ends

Yes if you have the kit should be able to test compression and injectors

just give it some flame down the inlet .... if it don't start with hot air assistance ..... keep going and torch it

The addiction that people have mentioned is caused by the easy start detonating as apposed to deflagrating.

A deflagration is a slow burning which is what you need. A detonation is a supersonic burning which causes a shockwave, think sonic boom from a military air craft. The shock wave causes cracking of the rings which subsequently break causing loss of compression.

Sorry, I know it’s late at night but that’s the scientific explanation and I could not sleep without sharing
