whilst in the process I dragged this old girl out ... ought to do summat with it ... missing a starter motor sadly ... been looking regularly, but now't has come up
would like to make it run, 'fore spending too much time on it ...
t'other Dane I use has a bigger motor, and CNBA to rip the starter off that, to try this .. 's a lorra work .. can think of a few things I could do with this if it'll run tidy
another item that got pulled out was an old bench I've had maybe 30+ years .. old school w/shop bench, 4ft square .. I got given two of 'em and stuck some ply tops on with a 3mm sheet on top
being out in the weather's not done them a lot of good, since they came home from the workshop .. were handy little things about the shop and have seen a fair bit of use here too ........... but .. bottoms of the legs'd rotted off
... thought they'd just sunk in the planings, but nope .. legs fooked got converted to Morso fodder and kindling Saturday
should have enough kindling to last the winter through now .... have chopped up a hell of a lot of lately, of all descriptions
much easier on the bench and the chop saw lengths it up a treat .....got two 45 drum fulls and several large cardboard boxes stashed
been trying to get to Hereford for a week or two to pick up some new blades for the Startrite ... set has gone off the blade in there and drifts off if cutting anything large ...
like a 9" round lump of nylon
the reason I had to face this off a few weeks agoand has been holding up progressing on a little job .....
so ...
have had a day on the machines today
....genny's had a good run today ....
got everything sorted, tooling wise, 'fore winding it up and had very carefully set out some centres on the face of said lump, a while ago, in readiness
... needed the DRO on the Ajax, as had to achieve what I wanted with multiple tooling changes, as didn't have what I needed to produce the results in one hit....... took me while to recall WTF I'd put me box of collets ?? datum-ed up all the setting out on the DRO
and set about it
there is 'method' in the effort ....

and getting it back into the Harrison for a bit of shaping up ....

the groove needs a bit more profiling in the morning
and now as you're all wondering ... the reason I'm having to achieve this, this way with the three 40mm holes, is 'cos I ain't got a set of reverse jaws
for the Harrison's three jaw chuck and the knob I bought it off has never shipped the 4 jaw for it, that he forgot to stick on the truck it arrived on and swore to do on many occasions ... ..... and I have yet to find either a D1-8 mount 4 jaw, or a set of reverse jaws for this 3 jaw ....so had to get creative on how the hell to hold the damned thing ... worked a treat though

Russ had hired in Norm and his 50t Grove to place them out in the field, whilst he loaded 'em onto the traccy trailer combo to get them to him .. bugger omitted to say I'd have to sling and bank for the both of 'em .. I have had a VERY busy day
general view from the highest point in the compound ... a sea of PV cells
getting ready to rock -- coming round for his tail weights .... Russ thought some endless'd be easier than having to maul the chains on/off the hooks this time - but they were still some serious handfuls, balanced on the transformer 'container' frames
#1 in spot ...
and Norm wrapping down for his first move of the day's shenanigans
#2 was a bit more fun ... pads'd been installed weeks ago .... then the subbies dug a bloody trench through #2 stand .. so when i got down there with the load, they were still putting it all back together ..
but got it sorted after about an hour an' a half .. well sorted enough to get stood on with some bog mats too
then get the load as close as we could .... traccy lad says on the way down ... fancy some sounds ... was pretty surprised at some of grand-dad's choices .. didn't expect to hear the likes of Darude - Sandstorm, N Trance - set you free, Guru Gosh - infinity, Gina G, AC-DC, Killers, U2, Simple Minds, asked for .... and thought he was gonna lose it at Bass Hunter's Now You're Gone album .... we had some great tunes blasting for the rest of the day's trips
#3 was a tad exciting, down some serios slopes ..... combination of field tracks and country lanes to get to some of the sites
Norm hadn't been overly impressed with the access to this one and was starting to lose the will to live
got back to Russ about one and says to him " 'Bout time we had some breakfast innit ? "

felt a lot better after I'd eaten both me brekky and me lunch - was bloody starving - damn it's been hot today - was starting to feel the effects of a food shortage
didn't get to see where #4 was located, but'd just finished scoffing when they came back, so couldn't've been far ...
stuck #5 on the trailer, ready for the morning and we were in the Sportage, heading home here by 2.45 .. Russ's missus met us at the top of the drive at just after half four and they were away.
now bed time ... I am bollo-ed and another five o'clock start in the a.m. .. Russ is collecting me in the van in the morning at six .. get the others into place and then head back to Pontrilas Timber, for the afternoon to pull some machines out - there all weekend too, doing God knows what

As said .. they weren't ready when we got there -- de barker was only just running down and they were disconnecting the 'lectrics ... lifted it out eventually - big old lump - will get some pix tomorrow, when we re-orientate it for 'em on the floor, to get some of the new bits on ...
was a grey morning when i arrived at 5.45 today ...
it goes back at least half a mile
set up this morning to pull two big 'planer' wheels out - fearsome beasts covered in blades - rips logs down putting two flat sides to 'em in one pass ... everything you touch or go near in this line has sharp edges or bits
my view from the underside of the roof where I was co-ordinating operations
these wheels have a tapered locking collar system on the spindles and're supposed to hydraulically release, with a few good pumps from a grease gun --- assuming the lock collars're fitted the right way round -- gave up after two plus hours of trying, at this end of the line and went round t'other end of the building to have a crack at the other two at the far end of the line
further in to the building this side so we had to stick the fly on ... Russ must work hard on his own getting this on .. lot easier with two of us
and the luxury of a cherry picker
amazed the air was stopping in its tyre though
my view out the hole in the roof at the other end
new one ready for a flight ..... Russ for scale - he's 6' 6" ... 700 kgs of machined metal ... triple helix, machined from a solid billet about 6 feet across shudder to think of the machining hours in one

had to get the old ones out first .... locking collars were the right way round on them and they popped easy as pie with some hydraulic-ing from the grease gun -- slung 'em and lifted 'em out through the hole in the roof ... came out at 400-ish Kgs .. THAT is what you call serious wear - 6 year old -
so going down ....

next up, strip the fly back off and head back around the front for a n other go at t'others ...
getting it back around is manual grunt job and pretty tight in there
and ready to roll .....
got back round the front .... and in position for the other wheels ...

They can cross phases (particularly around droppers on transformers/switches etc) which leads to them being non-living very quickly!forgot to say, when I got back tonight, was a dead buzzard on the drive under the 11Kva lines ... looked like he'd broken his neck on a line ... shame, lovey looking bird

we'd had a look last night, 'fore we left, hence expectations of a long day ... Russ said to me last night, " let them get on with it, just oversee operations and give me signals .. "
Put some overalls on this morning .. machine was minging - get dirty just standing on it ... and it was pretty damned cool
well the " let 'em get on with it " didn't last long .. bloody clueless ... would've still been there this evening ..
Motor was impossible to extract on its own ..
whole assembly had to come out and what a bitch that was
flange mounted and totally inaccessible in the machine .... attached to a lump twice its weight and shoe horned is as the whole machine was built up around it
bit of head scratching and eyeing up - stuck a set of chains on with a master ring hung off them to give me summat to hang stuff off ..
and set about extracting this lump ..
took plenty of pix once I'd got it out ......
gonna have to put it back in next week or the week after
motors no longer made in this frame size so these're gonna have to be rebuilt
usual story in this place - everything you touch is bloody sharp / moves unexpectedly / wants to hurt you / is bloody heavy
had the second one out in probably half the time once I'd sussed the balance/angle of dangle/ how to juggle the burger out ....
didn't help having a.n.other part/bloody great arm, directly over head ... they're gonna have to come off to get these back in once they've been repaired ... mission impossible otherwise
had both out by Eleven - job done - just wrapping up ready to 'exit stage left' and the can you justs started .. can you just move three 40 ft twist locks 3 ft " are they empty? " were they fu** ... put 12 ton of pull on #1 - furthest reach .. didn't come off the deck
so recruited a tele handler and some extra chains ... to give them a bit of a tug along the floor .. worked fine ... these were interesting brackets - keep the forks put, up out the way
#2 and #3 were a lot easier - no lighter, but closer and handle-able at circa 14 ton ........
Russ said right that's all we've been asked, let's get wrapped up and out the gate bloody quick ... home having lunch by 1.15
gonna have to have a trip back one day this week to get those big wheel cutters out, once they've got 'em free of the shafts ...
currently trying to drill the lock collars to split them, but can see them having to gas axe the flanges off, while the crane hangs onto them, then gas axe the bosses off the shafts ...
booked for the 9th to lift the de-barker back into position and 15th to put the log line motors back in situ .. that'll be a fun day for sure
spent the afternoon mowing all the grass and then me hamster juice, 'fore tea
bit of a lie in tomorrow - hopefully .. 5 a.m. seems a long time ago - been up for 20 hrs
