well didn't get to Plantworx again for another 2 years :( .... had a begging phone call Monday night  ... could i please go help with the heated vacuum mixer again at Simon's bro.'s place ... the seal that didn't get replaced last time'd given up the unending struggle with the atmosphere and was in need of some expertise ;)

Now at 200 quid a throw I could sort of understand the reluctance to not change it last time, when we had it apart .... but ....
had it apart and ready to re-asemble just after lunch ... then fought for two hours with this bloody fragile carbon ring seal trying to get it back in to its housing ...

WP_20190612_11_47_03_Pro.jpg

persuading it into those three O rings is some feat .... especially when i discover that the seal is 0.5mm too big ... off the shelf, all they had were these half mil. oversize seals .. 4-6 weeks lead time on one the correct size  .... so had a fettle of the old one ....
WP_20190612_11_47_21_Pro.jpg

got it looking half about and it was 18.00:eek::(:( was gonna have to be a tomorrow job ... the day I'd planned to go with Alex to the show:(
... I was up for a job and knock, but Simon'd got summat planned for the evening and was already running late ... so that was the end of my plans for wednesday
re-fitted the 'fettled' old one the following morning --- the loss of that half mil made all the difference (y) and it went in a lot sweeter than t'other one that we'd spent two odd hours wrestling with the afternoon before and failing to get past the third O ring :( quite HTF we'd managed to get the other one in previously, on the last strip down is still a mystery  as working the dim.s there physically was not enough room in the recess for all that rubber to be displaced/compressed:unsure:

anyway .... it all went back together .... eventually and ran the old girl up ..... achieved 75% efficiency -- slight air leak but the vac. pump held its own and is likely to improve with a bit of use .... it'd get 'em out the tish with their production schedule for a week or so, 'praps more.

ordered up a couple of 130 mm lumps of 90 mm dia. carbon rod and lined up a guy locally to machine some new ones to the right diameter, when the stock arrives ... plus a couple of improvement mod.s to the design, (oh for a lathe of me own) ..... so'll probably be back there again next week for round three

and on the subject of lathes ..... @Mark .... the Dawnus sale has been some interesting watching these last few weeks .... virtually no bids 'til two days ago on anything .... opening bids on the lathes had dropped from 650 quid to £375 and still nada ... I'm thinking if no one bids I am gonna have to buy 'em both ... gonna need a crane and a truck down there - "two birds.......etc."

sadly the bidding kicked off on tuesday morning:(:( the Colchester mastiff's at £7k tonight with 12 hrs to run and t'other one that i have still not identified .... none of me mates recognise it either ... is up to £5k with 10 hrs to go

both well up to what they'm worth blind, untried ..... big Mastiff like that, trialed and fully OK'd make £10k, plus you've got a nice box and a serious pile of bar stock -- if you wanted it .... but a crane and truck for the day is gonna add another grand to the closing bid, plus the premium and VAT  and all the faffing about  .... not gonna be a lot of anything in that for anyone ... ditto t'tother one too ..... sadly :(:(

I know for a couple of Mastiffs at that size now, for £6.5 (noisy head bearings) and £9.5K ..... but at that length they're way bigger than i want ... must be a 12ft bed on that one in the box .... it fills it  ..... alright if it was cheap - you'd live with it  .... 5ft bed'd do me and can be had for anywhere between £3.5 and £5k ...no faff and no crane either ;)

I am going to be very interested to see just what they do make at lunchtime tomorrow

Pre bidding and online only sale is just a new thing with euro. A lot of people prefer the old school way bidding in person and checking out the lots in person. Especially if your spending 50 to 100 grand on certain lots 😳

Trouble with online auctions is they tend to miss the bits they don’t want you to see

too right .. on line is alright for simple things, but without actually viewing it, I'd never buy anything complex like a machine on line, without a comprehensive 'once over' first. As you say .... you only get to see the good bits in pix

couple of little interesting snippets for peoples memory banks ... Pam and I have started on Ken's estate, obtaining probate and general administration to do with his estate and his will, which he had me assemble for him a while back ...

First a horror story ....
been a while since we've done one of these and in 2015 the IHT/probate rules got changed - BIG time  and this is one to take careful note of, if you're ever likely to be involved in obtaining probate.
NOW ... you can no longer obtain probate, to administer a deceased person's estate, WITHOUT paying the IHT due - FIRST!!:eek: ..... so until you pay the death duties, you can't dispose of the estate, on which they are levied ... HMRC's answer to most people's problem, that they won't have the funds to do this, until the estate is liquidated / realised is ..... "borrow the money from your bank " ....
FFS :eek::eek: ...
even if the deceased has sufficient cash in their estate to do so, you can not access it until probate is obtained and you can't do that until you've coughed up to the blood suckers at HMRC  ...
apparently they are in turmoil with summat like a six month back log  ....
you have a max of 6 months in which to settle, from the date of death, after which HMRC will charge interest on the unpaid IHT due  :mad:
Thank **** we've gotten into this rapido .... we're on the clock with a huge amount to sort  .. even though Ken and I got it all pretty well sewn up, with regard to his explicit wishes and bequests, etc. .... that's the easy bit  ... once we've paid the bastards and gotten probate :mad:

secondly an interesting snippet that some may well know ... others may not.
Searching deep yesterday for some old files relating to the above, I came across a root, system folder, in 'old faithful' here, with almost half a million workbook back up temp files in it :eek: ....
the only thing that deletes these temp. files is you ... no system driven purge ...
if you don't know they're there they just keep building up .....
and because there're so many a mass delete just won't work with the CPU memory available.
been binning files 5000 at a time on the smaller ones 100 at a time on the multi Mb files .... on the up side the old girl is now performing a lot better than she has in a while :giggle::giggle: and I'm down to about 120,000 files to go from the half mil. I started with :giggle::giggle:

third -- found this in my email archive, searching for title reg. correspondence from 5 years back .... an interesting article ... which has now disappeared from the Planning Portal archive - mysteriously , but the good ol' beeb still have it live (y):giggle:

basically Sec. 106 money is being hoarded / unallocated / unspent .... if you've got a sec. 106 currently being hung over your job like the sword of Damocles .... take a look at how much the authority has tucked away unspent ... then tell 'em to sod off - they don't need it as they've not spent all they have yet :giggle::giggle:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-25094100

our lot are always pleading poverty and upped the council tax 6% in April, but closed our local nick - 2nd largest populous town in the county and no plods - closest is 10 miles away - 16 from us  .... but also managed to find the funds to buy a £21M retail park, out of county and another £14M for another in county, but they can't afford to collect the bins once a week  or fix the bloody roads :mad:

The ridiculous thing about the 106 is its all about budgets. Think there is over a mill in our areas one, got the breakdown somewhere. I occasionally dip into it but a) it has to be for community projects and be a tangible asset ( ie a new bucket is ok but you can’t insure that bucket with it) and b) more to the point, no fucker knows it’s there to apply for and use! So it never gets used!

trouble is these bloody planners use it as a ransom chip  cost the people who bought my old yard (and me indirectly) over half a million quid in 106s :mad::mad: ..... bloke locally has a barn he wants to convert .... been derelict of years and not very big .. middle of nowhere virtually, in a couple of dozen acres he owns .... they want £35k off him as a sec. 106 payment, before he can have his planning consent, for this single dwelling ... he's living in a caravan on site ATM.:(
****ing ridiculous for a private house ....
he's not wanting to build an estate FFS
the county is awash with 106 money ... so much so they're buying £21M retail parks

so what is your connection with planning then @Charlie ???

If the files are all in one folder, use a command prompt and del *.tmp

From memory what my mother has done is sort a life insurance policy which pays out outside the estate which will cover IHT.

yeh all in one folder Alex -- least this lot is -- will go looking for other temp folders after this one  .... but getting greedy deleting results in a freeze :( ... assume there's not enough memory capacity to cope with the size of the requested deletion ??
wish I was as happy under a puter's bonnet, as I am a vehicles :( .... would make life so much easier

Yer mum is well switched on then Boyo (y) ... I / we keep our ears fairly well to the ground on this sort of stuff, amongst other things and it compleetely got past us .... first i'd heard of it, but haven't had to deal with it in a while
I'll probably end up squaring them up and get it back off the estate after

IHT seems a bit unavoidable now for single people without kids. If you own your own home then you're over halfway to the IHT threshold. Does the threshold revert back to 1 mil if you pass on to kids? If someone is on their 'deathbed' as such perhaps they should write a blank cheque to sort the IHT? I'm sure the government wouldn't be bothered who's bank it comes from. I wonder if people weren't paying up the IHT or what made them switch to this?

I paid some S106 around 3 years ago to build my last house. Was ring fenced for 'open space' but basically they weren't letting any development gain planning without signing it. Recently got planning for another house with same authority and they've taken this away now. After a high court ruling which deemed these unsuitable. So I check on the money I paid a few years ago still untouched. Got in touch with contributions officer a couple of months ago about getting it back but her attitude is I signed the unilateral undertaking without a clawback period so no chance. I wasn't aware as a layman that you could negotiate with the council on these matters. It was presented to me as a sign this else no planning scenario. I am sure that in the future it will become like PPI with firms getting the cash back for you. I would gladly split half of whatever a solicitor can get back for me on a now win no fee basis just to give the council a kicking.

£325k single, £650k if married and partner deceased, without having used any of the exemption previously  .... zero/unlimited, if all goes to spouse, but must be married .... a partner of 20 odd years gets no rights - currently!!

where did you get the £1M figure from?? Was mooted some time ago, but AFAIK never implemented :(:(

Going to go for APR (ag. prop. relief),but a bloody minefield of catch 22s and clauses on what you can and can't do/claim and massive paper trail to prove it all :(

Pretty sure any monies extorted under a 106 have a determinate period before having to hand it back .. not enough people try to get it returned and 106s have very specific criteria, with regard to usage/time periods .... don't think their unilateral bollox would stand up to the test ;)
