I think the like button stops a lot of spam type messages it also encourages posts.
For example I may just like a post because it is indeed cool and a job well done etc but I also dont have anything to add to it. so if the like wasn't there I wouldn't do anything at all .Worth remembering forums are a failing product really so they are quieter everywhere
