Makes me laugh when you see all these youtube 'projects' of shitty replicas of what you can pick up for peanuta brand new from China.
If you can weld good enough to be sure of a crane you build not failing, then your time is more valuable than the savings made by building something like that yourself.

the hydraulic integrity is between the piston seal and the bore .... the rod has no contact with the oil in a jack and there're no gland seals to leak at the top of the cylinder, as it's not double acting
.... so no seals to be damaged by a non-chromed rod

might have a dust seal and a bush in the top of the cylinder, but no hydraulic seals, as there should never be oil in that side of the piston ... if there is, the piston seals are bollo-ed
