I don't like the idea of claiming insurance but I've already told them and sent pictures of the damage so don't think I can now say I don't want to claim?

with no other party involved (apart from the poor Deer, and I would assume he’s not likely to make a claim) then I think you could choose not to claim in this instance. Repair the vehicle yourself or have it repaired privately?

Am I right in thinking that if the air bags go off, it cuts/turns the fuel off??

You’ve got a few choices.... cancel the claim and tell insurance not to assess it, let them assess it, probably write it off and take the payout or take some payout and try and buy it back as salvage. Second hand dash and airbag kits can be had for £250 on eBay.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better

most injected vehicles of either fuel have an inertia operated fuel cut off somewhere on the vehicle for sudden impact or overturning ... used to be quite primitive things - BL's answer was a ball bearing across two magnetic contacts ... too much grief and the ball let go;):giggle: .... probably a bit techier these days

It never cut my fuel off, I didn't think the impact was enough to get the airbags to deploy but there you go .

Must’ve just hit the right spot (or the wrong one) 🙈 How was the deer anyway, was it salvageable?

I only ask cos heard a few comments from the police, that the reason car thief’s reverse into them if there getting close to been caught, was to deploy there airbags which cuts the fuel.

On BMW's if there is a big enough front impact there is a small explosive on the battery lead from the positive terminal which blows

That’ll be it then, thanks🙂
There's alot of rumours about the cop vehicles, heard that airbags are programmed to be deactivated below certain speeds to avoid the issue of them being rammed and set off.
Only know about the the BMW battery as thought my mate was trying to wind me up about it, so had a search and sure enough it was true although a small blast to separate the connection in a crash

Still don't know where it went. It was dark and I was more concerned about the mess it made to my car

Also worth bearing in mind if looking to repair yourself that crash data may be stored in airbag ecu rendering it useless and in some that information is shared with the engine ecu via can to remove the need for an inertia switch. There is a strong possibility this may be more expensive to repair than you think
I hope that may help

Yeh, I thought it was a bit of a wind up to be fare, but, makes sense really. Can see now why they reverse at speed into the police cars to disable them.
