I cant see any business being around in 6 months times, every plumber, sparkie, chippy and brickie will be long bankrupt and living off foodbanks by then as they are getting f**k all from the gov. It will kick off bigtime. We are talking weeks not months i believe.

i think most business are geared up not to return for some time, a large house builder I know sorned over 300 machines the other day. Furlough is a minimum of 3 weeks too. I think June sometime , can’t see people returning to work until that death rate is down to sub 50-30 a day. They want to do 100,000 tests a day ... thats the end of April which means they think it’s going to get worse still

This is here for 6 months at least Fred. Make no mistake about it. The Gov have said we have 2 options.
Find a vaccine - which is over a year away so we are told.
Herd Immunity - which would work fast but would overwhelm the NHS. So doing this gradually would take nearly 2 years.

The above statements have both been said multiple times yet I still talk to people who think this lockdown is only for 3 weeks because thats what Boris said. Get with the program guys - this isn't going away anytime soon.
Sadly...I kind of agree with you...but hoping different

I agree starting to hear of a few "friend of a friend" types now getting it...one in 30s...in a bad way..
I can't see any real action till June.
I firmly believe this is worst thing weve ever had hit us as a country since WW2 ☹️.
I'm out of isolation now and just limping along best I can. Got payment Holidays on everything we can. Almost like everything has gone into hibernation.
I still back Boris in this 100%, lot of folk having a pop at them...but who knew where this was gonna go? Not left wing idiots for certain🤬

Around 3 months is what I am lead to believe for this first lockdown. ESB have suspended new connections for 4 months.

Nothing is of value atm, scraps down, machines aren't moving and no one dares dip into savings.... lot of people going to go bust.

Whats amazed me since all of this has come to light is how many business / self employed people dont prepare for a rainy day!!
Since day 1 in business especially when i started buying machinery i would always make sure i had enough in the bank to at least pay the finance for 6months should work ever dry up.

Trouble is Danny, they all run on borrowed money.... run short and you borrow some more..... the kit is always worth money worst case we will sell that.....

But when the Kit is worth half it's value and no one is lending the problems start..... I personally always run tight, but likewise a single asset we have would pay off the debts even at half value.

Other firms with zero assets and financed kit..... well it's going to be rough for the next 10 years.... it won't be a recession, it'll be a depression!

Most business run on borrowed money its trying to forecast the future hence the need for finance it works for some people others it doesnt.

If im honest Rory someone like your self who has always be honest about rates wether it be via your website or online amazed me how you jumped on the grant scheme. Yes it will give you some short term relief / abit of cash injection but you will be paying now in rates for the rest of your working life on your yard when you havent had to pay a penny previously.

Lets hope they dont back date it and you actually end up owing them money.

I was reading this in the paper this morning. Seemed to make sense to me (I'm not sure who Toby Young is as I'm not up on media types). If I get corona and am desperatly ill am I worth spending £500,000 on as opposed to someone with cancer whom they will only spend £15,000 to £30,000 on? However harsh I doubt it.
Article from the Telegraph:
This week I found myself “trending” at number one on Twitter. For the uninitiated, that’s not a badge of honour. Twitter creates a new “star” every day and, paradoxically, no one wants to be that person. You’re not at the top of the pyramid, so much as the bottom of a pile-on involving tens of thousands of people.

My sin was to write an online article in The Critic, a conservative magazine, expressing scepticism about the Government’s Covid-19 strategy. I queried whether it was worth spending £350 billion and destroying the economy to slow the rate of infection.

Is the case fatality rate really as high as Professor Neil Ferguson and his team at Imperial College would have us believe? Dr John Ioannidis of Stanford University has speculated that it may end up being 0.05 per cent, lower than seasonal flu. And what if Professor Sunetra Gupta and her team at Oxford University are correct and up to 50 per cent of us have already been infected?

Even if we accept the Imperial estimate that 250,000 will die if we don’t keep everyone locked down for the next 18 months, aren’t we placing too high a monetary value on extending the lives of people who, for the most part, are very elderly and will die soon due to underlying health conditions?

The average age of the patients who’ve died of coronavirus so far is 79.5 and average life expectancy in the UK is 81. I worked out that we’re valuing the lives of those 250,000 people at £500,000 each.

It was that last calculation that enraged the Twitchfork mob. Tens of thousands of people across the UK started denouncing me as a “Nazi” and a “eugenicist” or, if they were feeling charitable, a “Tory scumbag”. Apparently, anyone who dissents from the official Government line – that we should do “whatever it takes” to stop people becoming infected – deserves to be cancelled. Several people even called for me to be locked up.

In fact, NHS doctors place a monetary value on patients’ lives and use it to make clinical decisions every day. As a general rule, the National Institute of Clinical Excellence values one quality-adjusted life year (Qaly) at between £15,000 and £30,000, depending on health. Even if we assume that each of those 250,000 people will enjoy another eight years of perfect health, we’re still valuing their lives twice as highly as we would in normal times.

Evidently, lots of people find such reasoning deeply cynical during a time of national crisis, when our instinct is to protect the elderly and the vulnerable. But the economic damage being done by the lockdown will also cost lives. According to Philip Thomas, a professor of risk management at Bristol University, if GDP falls by over 6.4 per cent over the next two years as a result of prolonged economic inactivity, more lives will be lost than saved thanks to rises in poverty, violent crime and suicide. We’re already beginning to see the first signs of this in Southern Italy, where civil unrest is breaking out because people cannot afford to buy food.

The conclusion I reached is that the Government should end the lockdown after Easter and return to a mitigation strategy, with self-quarantining limited to those most at risk. Let’s get the economy going again before tens of thousands of businesses go bust, consigning millions to the dole queue. Our high streets were in trouble before the outbreak of Covid-19, but if the lockdown is extended for 18 months they’ll never recover.

Not everyone will agree with this analysis and that’s fine. What I find harder to understand is the intolerance shown towards those who challenge the current direction of travel. Surely, at a time like this, when the Government is making decisions every day that will affect all our lives for years to come, we need more scrutiny of those decisions, not less?

One of the most common criticisms made of me on Twitter is that I’m not a virologist or an epidemiologist so I should shut up. Instead, we should listen to the experts. But scientific experts aren’t infallible and how we respond to this crisis is ultimately a political decision, which means it’s a proper matter for public debate. Now is not the time to stop holding our elected leaders to account.

I believe Boris said they would review the situation in 3 weeks, almost most to give people a glimmer of hope, I expect we will get another 3 weeks at that review next weekend, for review again.

This. You were at it like a rat up a drainpipe :ROFLMAO: Short term thinking IMHO.

I have virtually no real money. What I do have is lots of diverse, paid for assets and the skills to use them. I'll weather this, but it might put my house purchase back/make it toally unreachable when inflation hits :cautious:

Bottom line is our yard is rate-able, it's already on the rates system as £4000 rate-able value, atm we get small business rates relief but without that it could easily be several thousand a year in tax. That is what you and Doob need to realise.... the only reason we don't pay rates at present is due to the rate relief (which I reckon will be cut at the end of this regardless whether you have claimed the grant or not!)

If they try to claw the money back it'll most likely be a increase in some form of tax which we shall all have to pay.... It's highly unlikely they will target individuals (although that would be the fair way).

If we end up owing 10k we shall pay it back when they ask. But I suspect it's highly unlikely..... I am rarely one for playing the free money game but in this instance your a fool if you don't take anything your entitled to!

That's my opinion anyway. If we had a agricultural (Zero) rated yard I would'nt of applied.... but it is and always has been industrial, so we might as well grab what we can.

Exactly, whether you claim or not, if they change the rates relief after all this it will still affect you. It is likely to be a hard few years anyway, why make it worse by not claiming what is being offered?

Rory, i understand everything you have said but when you wrote this comment

Just applied for my £10,000 Industrial site grant.... not proud of it but we will need it in the coming months.... what was going to be a fantastic year has basically gone to s**t.... 4 decent jobs for the coming months are on hold due to it :( will spend half that money paying bills that where due to be paid this month and then sit on the rest!

It reads as youll take the £10k grant and use it as your own cash flow paying bills. You should of already had the money in place to pay those bills jobs get cancelled all the time theres nothing new there.

problem with this if you want money from a bank to grow they will force you to use every penny you have first before loaning making sure you have a very limited cushion at most. Anything that is done at volume like house building is on a tight margin as it is, the big players make more money from the increase in their land bank values than they do building legoland houses.

3 months will wipe out every small business I know and I know a lot. End of April people will be back at it lockdown or not to put food on the table and look out anyone getting in the way.
As far as I'm aware the three weeks is based purely on human behavioural advice,so expect three week 'drips'

3 weeks is when the gov 80% furlow moeny runs out and people change to being skint. Cant see them extending that for another 2.5 months.

You have misunderstood that/I've typed it badly then.

What I mean in effect is we will take the 10k, pay everything we owe (including things that are not due until next month) so everything is paid whether it's due or not 👍. Issue we have currently is also bills I'm due which are yet to be paid..... Not started chasing people yet as I already know the answer 😢
