Compare 5 t excavators

Hi guys. I’m looking for some industry knowledge about 2 machines.
jcb 56z vs YANMAR vio57-6b
we are going to be using the machine for flailing and tree shear along with general digger work around the farm.
so jcb not much info on hydraulic pump type. Flow rate 95 L min the dealer said you’ll be able to track and flail at the same time fine.

yanmar
2 double piston pump with variable flow 45.8 l min
1 gear pump 37 l min
1 gear pump for pilot line 10.8 l min.
dealer said it’s designed around hydraulic applications it’s the one for you.

so could someone please explain to me which they’d go for please?
Or other valid reasons to go or not go for one (not my Mate had one 30 years ago and I thought it was s**t.)

I’m not going to comment on which digger is best, but I’m telling you now in no uncertain terms none of them off the shelf will track and drive a flail properly at the same time, some will to a fashion but the tracks steal too much oil.
but tbh I’ve never really felt I needed to, I started on tractor hedge cutters and at first it seems natural to want to track and flail at the same time, 95% of the time a better job can be made with the machine stationary and the flail ‘waved’ about.

I said I wouldn’t comment but the YANMAR is probably better built

From my research you have to step up to a 8 or 9 ton cat with dedicated pump for aux flow to truly be able to track and mow at the same time.

I have the older 57c jcb, it most definitely won’t flail and Track at the same time! I bet the dealer has never even seen a 56 with a flail on!!

My advice is to get both machines on Demo and buy the one you like the best

I bought a big flail mower off a relatively new firm who were/are still all over eBay. Very convincing guy on the phone (who also subsequently delivered it to me (spoiler alert!)). Before I ‘went for it’ I asked if I could speak to an existing owner (and ideally see a machine at work) - ‘We have loads sold in your area but I can’t give you details because of GDPR regulations’…
I bought it anyway (I had a job coming up that pretty much paid for the machine and in fairness it did what I needed) but it’s turned out to be a pile of Chinese shite (uk manufactured apparently - my arse!). It was cheap and has some decent features that are essential to my work - it would actually be a very good machine if built properly. Sadly it is built out of bean tins (and the manufacturer/dealer is a total waste of time).
This wasn’t a ‘BIG’ purchase so it’s not the end of the world - however, I won’t buy anything of merit again without a proper demo of one sort or another.

And now case and new Holland are same machines from eurocomach

Always wanted a eurocomach but dealer to far away
So this opens up options to maybe jump ship on next purchase
Both new Holland and case are not far from me so also could play them off each other for identical specs for a keen price when the time comes

Looking at the specs of both last night for the 65TR they are the same as eurocomach

I'm not so sure on those Eurocomach's... Lovely spec, and I have never driven one yet, but sitting in them at shows I haven't been impressed with the build quality, and some of the designs are horrible ergonomically, poor visibility etc. To be honest, Luigong are ahead of them in terms of build quality in my opinion from seeing both of them at various shows.

As for JCB vs Yanmar, both should be capable machines, although agree with others, tracking and flailing is unlikely, but might not be as much of an issue as you imagine it to be once you get into it. It will come down to the deal I expect, and who can provide the best backup.
If you are serious about the JCB as an option, then your sales rep should be able to get in contact with someone at the factory who can answer any technical questions you have. He should also be able to get you up to the quarry for a test drive. Push him harder! I know JCB have 0% on some mini's at the moment too so they must be keen to sell some.
And please tell us what you end up going with, and why - so many of these threads die out once the OP buys something.

Just to throw my experience in the ring, the Yanmar will track and cut. I sold a flail to a guy that had an older one and it would track and cut.
Not sure about the JCB, but to be honest it all goes down to the size of the flail and the machines setup

Specialist high flow 'beaver packs' (diesel, 100hp plus) are mounted for this kind of purpose on large excavators counterwights, often for forestry tasks such as stump grinding or mulching. But it's a massive extra expense.
