I think the sad reality is that instead of being able to concentrate on innovating the backhoe, they have spend all the budget on getting them through emission's standards that raise every year
I don't see how you can even think that. The engine in a 3cx is shared with so many other machines so is jcb's whole product range being held back by emissions?
The reality is there isn't much left to innovate on a backhoe especially keeping within a budget which a customer wants to pay. Money no object we'd all have a Huddig.

did anyone else think ...... "they'm 'kin huge pistons for a 4+ litre engine" ??????? or are their motors massively over-square? looked more like a 5", 290 Cummins piston (10.8lt)

You are right, I meant more to package it all. T3-T4i wasn't too bad. But you've got to find room for the DPF, EGR gubbins, modules to control it, no doubt move some other stuff about to make it fit in a half sensible way. T5 sees addblue which needs a whole nother level of gubbins, including a separate tank for the liquid.
Whilst these changes are common across all machines, the way they are packaged isn't and would take some working out.
If the 2000 era 3cx was the pinnacle of the machine with all the extras you would want but none of the tech that lets modern ones down, then the only thing keeping the design department busy the last 20 years has been where to put the cup holder....
Porsche have the same people working for them on the 911 design 😆

The only thing JCB has done with the 3cx the past 20 years is gradually bodge it cheaper.....

Are there improvements that could be innovated in a backhoe? Yes without doubt..... Are they wank legs to look over the top of RoRo Bins or patch planers and sweep sweeps stuck on the front with a fancy "Master" name? No.

Tbh i don't see they are a vast amount worse than one's from 20 year ago. Other than servo controls for the back end there's not a lot on one now that wasn't there 20 year ago. They just change colours and shape of mudguards once a month so you think they are a new model.
Nah the new ones are all computer controlled now, like Ollie say’s mainly due to the engines, it’s all integrated - the days of pulling a sensor out to fix a problem has gone, plant machinery has gone very automotive - rightly or wrongly!!

regardless of all that I can’t be the only person sat watching it all thinking ‘hmmm I wouldn’t mind a new backhoe 🤣’

Yeah fair enough engines have an ecu doing an awful lot more now due to emissions but there's no way round that unfortunately (its why my 6 ton dumper is a 2011 cos an ecu on a dumper is a no no for me). Sad part about electrics and touchscreens controlling or interfering with everything else on a machine now (not just 3cx's but 360s and everything) is that 90% of ops now are more interested in turning a dial and pressing a few buttons to be able to alter every imaginable setting in a machine then actually getting on a doing the job.

days of the ICE engine are over, they are mad spending dollar into them.

Look at tesla market cap bigger than ford and gm put together.

Whoever gets the quick change or charge battery back to market will win. Personally i cant wait to get rid of the hassle of diesel engines and fuel hassle on the plant, firms like JCB should be at the front of this not piddling about with fossil engines.

Bamford should just pick up the twitter to Elon and get it done, they would take the heavy plant market overnight.

We know you can be very creative with the figures @fred but where you gonna magic all the leccy to charge with from and fast enough.

that is where the innovation needs to come from. Tesla have done it with their rapid chargers, a mini version of those on site and its done. a full shift charged in 20 mins. Maybe they could lease them to us and then they get hooked up to a temp supply ? If its a site where temp supply isnt viable then a battery sweepout is needed.

Wonder which way JCB will go ?

I don't know how good a plan dragging big charging cables through a foot of sh*te in the pi**ing rain on a uk site will be. You're more than welcome to try

J. C. B. is backing running internal combustion engines on hydrogen for the larger machines. Solar farms in the vast outback of Australia, convert the evolved hydrogen into ammonia and ship it by sea going tanker 🙂

Been onto a ‘modern’ building site lately? You’ll have a floodlit tarmac bay with boot wash facilities for every machine 🙄
