Budget and red diesel restrictions

Fuel might be tax deductible but expenses still eat into profit. Seen too many people think a new van is coming off their tax bill. No they're saving 20%...

not quite.

100% of its value is written off, sometimes over a couple years. You can then buy this from the company for peanuts and sell it privately for whatever you can get.

i Don’t think we are prepared for the impact this would have on farming. Most farming is about moving stuff from A to B. Or B back to A. It will destroy the farming community if it goes completely. Construction would have no choice but to take it on the chin and pass the costs up the line. I use 500 to 800litres a month and have warned the client I will be putting the costs up accordingly as it is not coming from my margin!!

don't think anyone is prepared for the effects it'd have Shaun ... they have cried wolf on this one for so long, (in excess of 15 years that I can recall ) that no -one takes it seriously whenever it raises its head again ..... could be wolf time, this time :oops::eek:

Rates are pushing 30 quid here for operator and machine on something around 5t or backhoe. Whays this going to add per hour say 6x50p per hour? Genuine question.

Also will this make it more or less of a level playing field? Depends if they keep for ag and police it I suppose

this is going need me to add about 75p per hour to my rates but the small guys not vat registered it will be more as vat on derv is 20% and not the 5% on gas oil.Glad I am not running a D6 at 200 lt per day that would be an extra £10-£12 per hour

At the end of the day if it's done away completely for everyone its not that massive a deal, adjust rates accordingly suck it up and get on with it. What other choice is there? At the end of the day the work will still need to be done. It may even encourage some outfits to be a bit more efficient and start to use more appropriately sized machinery. There's not a lot a building site can't be done with a 13 tonner so why if the haul truck is a 6 ton dumper do you need a 30 ton digger to load it. If its kept for ag there'll be plenty cheat and get round it but will they undercut people or will they just gain a bigger profit margin.

looks like it'll go across the board ... ag included .. or they'll never keep on top of illicit users ..... if it doesn't exist then yes it will be one level playing field as far as the eye can see
if it doesn't vanish completely it'll create a whole new sack of worms for C&E/HMRC

Bloody hell mate, mini digger and op is £32-£35 an hour down here (Sussex). How the hell do people pay for a 50k machine at £30 per hour?

it won’t add much to my individual costs as everything bar the forklift is just three cylinders, but it’s the overall costs to EVERYTHING in the wider economy that worry me.

if it’s not done away with completely it will be even less of a level playing field, with the usual suspects claiming that there’s only a bit of red in their digger tank because they were doing agricultural drainage last week.

it'll also 'see off' thousands of 'heaps of diesel vehicles' that're used simply 'cos they're running red full time and have no real value if confiscated ....
used to get loads of people buying red who I 'knew' were using it in cheapo heaps ...
it went out in cans and I had no control over retail sales of less than 100 litres, as far as accountability was concerned ... over 100 and I had to take details of purchaser, usage, collection vehicle reg., etc, etc ... trace-ability in other words.
bigger penalties would've cure that issue years ago

the only 'bummer' is folks like myself who use it legit on little projects, as I do and for nothing else ... within the law .. 's gonna hurt filling the 'Drema / dumper / jake / roller / pressure washer / etc. with white

they can't police the system they already have 🤬 🤬 ......RDCO offices in Newcastle have a 1000+ strong staff admin.-ing the current farce of a so called system ... that'd go for a start if red went (y) .. otherwise they're gonna have to multiply the staff levels massively  .... when was the last time you had a C&E van come check your vehicles for red???
I used to see them once a month .. they knew full well that none of my road going vehicles, that couldn't run red, did, before they came in, but was a soft target, to keep their stat.s up --- ran cars, trucks, mobile cranes, FLTs, etc., and sold red and white, so was a great potential target as far as they were concerned

Just to give you boys something to think about, there was something on the farming forum the other night of someone using 1500 litres a day in his quad trac,so say about £750 a day for fuel.if the rebate goes that will more than double
