used to clock the MPG brim to brim on the tank and mileage on a run .... regularly ran up to Reading / London suburbs with steelwork for the timber frame guys, I did lots for, or sometimes up North like Leeds :( ... and yes .. went like hell in the night if you clogged it - at a cost
Ours broke down one day and was...let's say, loaded to the limit. Towed her in with my old 03 plate lux. Fortunately it wasn't a long journey.
Now a days if anyone tows 750kg trailer behind a 03 lux they say its underpowered. 🤣.

They ought to try a mk3 lux with the 2.4na engine before they even think about mentioning the words underpowered...and even then it still did the job.

once towed 29t of Hydrocon Huntsman crane with a Siii SWB 2.5D landy .. admittedly not far and on the flat -- enough to bump start it, after the bloody starter gave up the ghost

13mpg in an old isuzu trooper isn't bad, don't forget your talking early 90s old school 3.1 derv lump. Last trooper made will be around 21 years old now and they went to a 3.0 engine (cat engine with issues) in around 99. That was big improvement on mpg...just not reliability.
My 3.0 auto SWB used to like a drink, especially with a trailer on the back. Trouble was you didn't really feel the weight of it behind you- in power terms at least, always found the load positioning had to be spot on- so the speed was always creeping up...
Brilliant little trucks, comfy, big boot, fun to drive and so manoeuvrable- could swing my 14ft trailer round on 2 lanes if the pavements were clear 😆
I check the classifieds for another one every so often but they're getting a bit thin on the ground now unfortunately.

The dmax is available in other countries as a station wagon usually called an mux but a Norwegian I worked with says there they are marketed as trooper still. We get a bit of a poor selection of 4x4's as the Hilux ranger and d max are all available as station wagons elsewhere. Mitsubishi did the shogun sport but now pulled out of Europe

My 2nd truck was a 2.4na mk 3, I think it must have been opened up a bit- it'd quite happily sit at 80- 90, once saw 3 figures downhill on the m1...
Didn't do much heavy towing as I didn't have a trailer licence at the time but I'd regularly have a 750kg trailer full behind it and a ton on the back and never felt excessive. Did tow a 1.5 mini with it a few times, don't remember it feeling awful. I bet it'd feel different now 😆 🤣

Let that go for absolute buttons with an overheating issue, if I knew then what I know now.... 😔 😟

Towed an old vw lwb van with 2 full pallets of 25kg bags of dog food in with my 2.4 mk3 hilux. About 4 ton dead weight, 7 miles with a big (by Hertfordshire standards) steep hill in the middle, 6 months after I'd passed my driving test 😆 🤣 that was a long, stressful 7 miles!

It's a petrol lpg dual fuel 3.2 now as I swapped the dead 3.5 engine so 13 mpg on gas at 58ppl and usually towing at least 2.5 ton I get a little more unladen maybe 14 and yes it will easily do 100mph just went up to Worcester today to get some wheels for my bobcat 80mph all the way set on cruise

I had a disco 1 for a while which has the same chassis and drive train I think whilst the Isuzu was poorly and I hated it was also an auto which I don't like for towing 3.9 v8 I think that was more thirsty than the Isuzu

Was easy to adjust back in the day.

The 2lt is well known for the overheat issues.

nah ... 100" RR classic chassis and running gear ... the 3.9 was a way over-bored 3.5 engine - hand grenade with the pin out .. bore walls were too thin ... take a bomb proof motor design and completely bollox it - the P38 is a totally different animal completely. I have a D1 with the 3.5 V8 in it ... pulls like a train and returns an average of circa 15mpg, but it is 5sp. great towing sled ... only real improvement would be an LT95 box and overdrive instead of the LT77 five speed - too fragile

The straight 6 jag lumps have a sound of their own.

Pam had a lovely D1 3.5 V8 when I first met her in '99 ... was immaculate ...

but the usual body mount rot got to it eventually and it had to go
replaced it with this that I gassed .. a real minter ..... then damn me BWW gave her a company car and I ended up running the Vogue SE for a while - another 3.5 .. wouldn't touch a 3.9

P38 replaced this one
