Tbh for the price of this it's amazing dealers rent all over it I'm sure they could add there slice to it sell it straight of the forecourt in uprated state and plenty would tick the box as that is a fair wedge of extra weight you can legally carry

be aware if you go to a panel van you may be also into the realms of tacho fitment. you seem to avoid this with a suitable 4x4 rated to tow this. possibly a sprinter 4x4 comes into this but you could possibly buy a new pickup for the price of a second hand sprinter 4x4.

Dual purpose exemption is only for Operators licence not tacho.

there is talk of uppping the 3.5ton limit to 5tons to cope with electric wagons with 2 ton of batteries.

I think they upped it to 4000 or 4250kg for elec vehicle only BUT you have to go on an approved driving course.

Also some trailer setups should have an o licence but I have never heard of anyone actually having one for a 3.5t trailer
They would definitely need all the same paperwork and the 7.5tonner is 100times better for there work

Also for any one looking Clancy's have some 7.2t iveco dailys and loading in Conway's they seem to get about 4t of tarmac on whereas the 7.5 t daf I sometimes drive is only good for 2.5t
It's a bit pathetic really

If the only reason you are over the O licence limit is the trailer & the trailer is under 1020kg unladen its Operators licence exempt.

So my old man can run a 3.5 ton trailer behind his 7.5 tonner🤔 ....... oh dear... dont tell him that🙈

If he has a pre 97 licence & not hing else then he is limited to 7500kg vehicle & 750kg trailer (or a combination up to 8250kg is 6000kg vehicle & 2250lg trailer). on his C1E licence with 107 restriction.

To get 12000kg you need to actually take the tests.

There are two options that no one has yet mentioned.

1, This only applies if you have a BE licence from before 19-01-2013 be that by passing the test or for free pre 97.
That licence gives you an unlimited trailer capacity as long as the vehicle is rated to take it.
So you could buy an Iveco mini artic 7500kg vehicle, that has a 12000kg GTW.
Down plate vehicle to 3500kg but it keeps the 12000kg GTW.
As long as the load is such that the Vehicle is not over 3500kg in use you can load up the trailer quite a lot.

2, A pick up with 5th wheel. Make sure the pick up you use has over 1000kg bed load & 3500kg tow capacity at the same time.
You can then have a trailer plated to 3500kg but actually weights 4500kg fully loaded as the extra 1000kg is applied to the vehicle via the 5th wheel. Again you need to practice loading to gain the most. This would be fine on all BE licences. as the vehicle & trailer are both under 3500kg each.

That second option would only work with the new ssangyong or a defender though
As surely anything American won't carry a tonne and be under 3.5t simultaneously

Number 1 is very intresting indeed.

Any trailer over 3.5t is Platable (so ministry test) and also needs a O License due to that. Then you also have the reality of the superimposed weight on the towing vehicle which will throw you over the 3.5t.....

Likewise over 3.5t requires Air Brakes....unless the law has changed on electric control.

Oh and the final option
Buy a tractor ensure that there is no rear number plate a maximum of 2 working lights and the breaks are iffy at best then you can do what you like 😜
Is the correct answer!

Lots of imports dont have a GTW on the plate or V5c so cant even tow at all.

Plenty that are still in the 3500kg+3500kg bracket on a standard poet 19-01-2013 BE.

Ah you mean £10k not 10,000kg Doh.

This how the Dutch do it. It is an Iveco tractor with a close coupled trailer. Depending on the size of the trailer the empty weight varies between 1400kg and 1640kg. Max gross weight is 6 tonne and it can be driven on a B-E license (before 2013). If you got your drivers license after 2013 then max gross weight is 5 tonne.
