Retirement is currently looking like a decent idea
I'm considering at least semi retirement. The paperwork just seems to get more every year so I spend time doing admin when I could be doing something enjoyable instead. The trouble is I enjoy messing about with machines and have no real hobbies as I spend all my time working. Also being at home 24/7 I'd be lucky to get away with a divorce rather than murder.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
retirement takes some getting used to for sure ..... out the house half six, six days a week ... home gone seven usually, often later and doing what I loved - making things :) ...
being ill helped the wind down considerably and if we hadn't moved here a few months before, I'd have almost certainly been busting to get back there, which would not have ended very well, as I just wasn't up to it for a loooong time.
Had sort of been working towards retiring for a while, but actually doing it would've been some decision and'd probably still be at it now, if my hand hadn't been forced

So going to have to change from RED to WHITE diesel soon on the machines that I use on site....

.......the stuff I have in my 'fuel store' has lasted me well and has nearly all gone.

BUT I now need to decide what the 'best practice' is for the following:
  • Do I need to clean out the machine fuel tanks?
  • Will it suffice to simply drain the tanks and filters
  • I don't use much so is it best to buy white from usual Supermarket forecourt pumps
  • If I rock up with a 200 litre drum on my Ifor with the digger am I permitted to fill it etc
It will be interesting to hear what other small operators will be doing.
Finally, is there a thread already going on the big April Fools Day changeover
Just ordered a 210L 12V tank fir the pickup.. Comes under ADR exemption if for your use etc.
Our bunker will allow me to take 500L from the pump no worries. That's way I'm going fir now.
But I'm only playing 😁

I bought a 100l 12v pumped tank off @CPS which has sat on its pallet until this week. It is plenty to keep us working remotely other than when mulching (have a 900l fuel cube for when we are drinking it, which has until now lived in the back of one of the trucks for day-to-day use).
The little bowser is brilliant, it’s going to be the go-to from now on. Less to fill/lose/cart around etc etc.

Standard anti glug fuel drums
Take a refueling hose
Pretty much what i use now. Trouble is finding something which refuelling pumps fit into but you can also use with a spout which arent ridiculous price and to throw away after a few months.

I have a load of Jerry cans you can have if you collect them or pay the postage.
They don’t take a refuelling hose though.
We were forced to clamber up onto a machine to fill it from Jerry cans because ‘helfandsafety’ wouldn’t let us use the excavator’s refuelling hose in recycled 25l hydraulic oil drums because they weren’t proper fuel cans…..
The world is f***ed, I want to get off!!!

I always say, “It’s not work if you enjoy what you’re doing “ 😊
My grandson Ryan now repeats that phrase 🤣

.........and yes it does take a big adjustment. In 2009 after 30 years service I was only 53 but realised that I would need a year or so to adjust. BUT, I has planned for it well in advance. The next day I was happily 'self employed' ☺️
And what you have gone through Gra is a real lesson in life itself. My biggest fear is if suddenly I could NOT work....
.......and SWMBO would sell all my boys toys to you lot :ROFLMAO:

No there's an idea. In fact when I was lorry driving until recently, some of the bigger tractor units would gulp down 500-600 litres in one sitting at the HGV pump  often got caught out as the part timer when the regular driver couldn't be arsed to keep his wagon topped up:p
Yes agree with that - we all like playing with big boys toys

Forced by who?

Sucking derv out any old tub is same as sucking it out a bowser.

They look like they may be a useful addition to my fuel store and site use.
AND a worthwhile business expense.
I have a very nice 12v submersible that empties a jerry can quickly into my little machines that that may be the way to go

Thanks but no thanks - take a gander at the photo of my fuel store. Got loads of the buggers kicking around.
Just gotta keep track of what's in them
I am sure that others on this forum will be glad of some extras......
