I'm no tech and battery expert. But my understanding is that the cells in the 54v battery are actually arranged as 3x18v in parallel and with internal circuitry can switch over to being in series and so 54v (if I've got it the right way round). So the 9.0ah battery is 9ah at 18v but at 54v you divide by 3 so they are 3ah. Due to the higher voltage at 54v you don't need as many ah's hence the advantage. Makita 40v max is the same or similar idea only using 2x18v. This is one of the reasons Makita 2 x 18 battery tools (36v) are so good and cost effective as they double the volts with no ah loss and can utilise existing batteries everyone has.

the 5ah 18v is about a quarter the size for example.

That one of the makita battery that blew up I'm sure was either non genuine or non uk or damaged. Not fan boying I'm just sure i remember there was something about it.

RC cars/ planes have been using flat lithium polymer batteries for years.

You got to remember to take everything tech wise with a pinch of salt. They aren't allowed to blatantly lie in their advertising but they can mislead very easily with wording. It's not always what they tell you that's misleading either but what they don't. Tesla included here of course he's gonna run any other system than his own down he wants you to buy his.

Again, not a fanboy but we still use Makita batteries over five years old with hardly any loss of performance. Never had a genuine battery explode or fail, and I’ve only heard of it happening when they’ve been charged on a knock-off charger.

I am not a heavy user but have a drill, impact driver, angle driver and hammer drill. Several 20v batteries and some of the 40v. For what unpaid and use it for you can stick the other brands where the sun doesn’t shine!!!

If nothing else this thread encourages me to think about only recharging unattended lithium cells in a fire resistant enclosure.
Really don't like the idea of using pouch cells or prismatic cells in any application that has high discharge potential, cylindrical cells may not be as energy dense but they will be intrinsically better cooled

got a Ferrex drill, impact drill, impact driver, jigsaw and grinder, which i have mentioned before .. bloody excellent tools for my limited use (grinder performs well regularly now) --
cheap as chips tools, batteries're 30 quid ea. for the 20/40V, the tools're less ....
looking at that 200 quid battery above, could have a barrow full of the Ferrex batt.s for that
... charge in circa 30 mins .... hold charge very well and will run the grinder for 2-3 hrs ... At the price you really can not fault them ... oh and 3 yr warranty on the tools, 12 months on the batt.s ..........only down side ATM is the boat with their current shipment of spare batt.s is yet to arrive from Ying Tong, so're a bit short in supply ..... 'til it arrives .....
I have a battery for each tool and one spare currently and'll invest in a spare for each when they're back in stock .... tools have proved themselves worthy
..... for my usage anyway ... dunno how they'd fare in hard use has always been the reason I do not have a lot of batt tools .... too bloody dear to justify the costs (particularly of the batteries) for my limited usage .... especially when i have power available 99% of the time - or a genny handy

Ive 4 of the 9ah 54v flexvolt batteries they are only 3ah in 54v and 9ah in 18v but great for tripod light or smaller grinder or 18v breaker but in my 54v breaker or grinder or table saw or 300mm chop saw they’re only 3ah but use time isn’t noticeably short. got 8 of the 6ah 54v and 12 of the 5ah 18v so can keep 3 guys going all day with desalt kit
