The cap on the reservoir might say DOT4, but that doesn't help if it's not original.
Wet brakes should never get hot enough to need a DOT fluid, but it still may be correct.
Just to clarify, the pedal is very soft, but the fluid level isn't dropping?
When you bled the lines, did you also slacken off the connecting line? It looks like it could trap some air in it,

think I'd push the DOT4 out with some sae 30 ... might get away with it ...

It’s what I do!
But if the cylinder is not original and the seals are originally used with dot4 the seals will be ok with dot4 and Sae30 but you need to clean brake lines and axle cylinders right through , before re bleeding with sae30.

I got hold of some 32 and used that for the time being ! Once I’d flushed it through I’ve suddenly got resistance in the brake pedal..
not at all like new car but definitely make progress. I’m thinking of getting a new master cylinder just to make sure as it’s a bit intermittent. I’m getting a few solid pumps of the brake pedal then it becomes free for 2 pumps and begins to build pressure back up. I’ll let you if it stops once I’ve fired the old beast up

keep bleeding ... could well be lots of air in there ....... or put a Schraeder valve in the reservoir cap and pressurise it through with a couple of PSI of air pressure in the res. ....... just make sure the res. doesn't run out of fluid .... If I remember rightly the 4000’s had a fair bit of propshaft clatter when slipping the clutch to pull off! Keep up the good work

Matbro, the now extinct materials handler manufacturer used to cheerfully fit brake reservoirs with "use dot four" moulded into the lids on machines built with tractor axles that couldn't have dot 4 in them.
Difficult bleaders do sometimes respond to having the fluid pushed in at the axle end and drained out of the reservoir ..... same as they are factory filled.
Wondering if the non-return valve on the master cylinder is playing up, the one that let's fluid from the res into the cylinder and closes at the beginning of the stroke

Exactly that, and early thwaites and benford used the same lids, even though they couldn’t use dot 4!

If the peddle is going down repeatedly, but the level isn't dropping, the fluid must be returning the the reservoir.
If the level is dropping, but you can't find the leak, it'll be draining into the axle.
You're doing better than me - the unit I used had no accessories (none left anyway). What are the for?took me a couple of minutes to work out WTF the tripods were for
