Hi All I have a very old Massey Ferguson 450s. The tracks are very loose and I’m having a mare to tighten them. Can anyone identify this set up please. Any advice be greatly received.

Many Thanks.

How long have you had it ? What work are you doing with it ?
what year is it ?
I assume you’ve been trying to fill the piston behind the idler with grease ?

I’ve Had it for a about six months now. I Bought it for a self build. Not to sure on the age previous owner said 1950s but wasn’t sure either. There’s another grease nipple in behind a dust nut I’ve tried that one and removed rear plates in case they were causing friction. No joy with anything yet🙈🙈.

I like cake
they can quite simply seize, or get surrounded with mud etc.

It will likely be grease filled so that grease nipple behind the dust cover is the one, you may need to get them taken of and cleaned up tbh

I would of thought it would be a late 60s or 70s machine . It looks like an early jcb 805 power slide maybe there was a link with them

have you managed to do any work with it yet ?

Thankyou for all your comments. The sliders arnt moving at all. I’ve had the nipples and top bolt out with that jack maxed out and the truck winch pulling at same time. I can’t remember seeing any other nipples but will double check tomoz. I’ve managed to get a few hours out of her but the top ram failed and a hydraulic pipe connected to rad. I got the ram off and stripped it down turned out to be end seal but did the lot at same time. She’s going beautifully now and with these tracks tight would be awesome.

With the tracks slack you should be able to get some movement between the sliding part and the frame, maybe side to side but a little movement somewhere. It could have years of soil and muck packed in around it, and a bit of corrosion and its held solid.

Hi Craig. I even tried pushing them in with a gatepost in the bucket. Think your right and they have actually bound themselves together.

the 450s was a good machine the firm i worked for had a 350c it was no match for the 450s a guy i know recently got a 450s i have not seen it up close but he is happy with it at the moment, i have no idea on the track tensioners could well be stuck with rock hard muck tying it all up.

I Gave up on trying to tension tracks and turned my attention to the tank full of mud that had fouled the derv filters and glass bowl. Two new filters later and a temporary fuel tank (new). We have done some work and I’ve got to say she’s a different Machine now. Looking over the tracks again today found a few other caps on a cylinder. Just wondering if they would be to do with it.

Have you tried pushing them in with the bucket of the machine ? If you take out any grease nipples so there is no pressure and then push them in with the digger bucket til you get them right in then try again .
