For the Record I would always recommend S30 on a sub 3ton machine, the likes of your Hitachi ZX33, KX030 etc handle the weight of S40 no problem.

Also worth noting is that there isn't actually a massive difference in weight in the R1 S30 or S40.... I'm talking maybe 10kg in a direct mount unit.

I would also recommend to customers thinking of a unit to consider a selector grab over a gripper.... yes they are heavier over all, but also work out cheaper and a gripper is a gripper on the times that you need a grab.

had one.

kx030-4 with engcon on an indespension alumax. fully legal.

buckets on the tipper.
must/ve been pretty bloody borderline Fred .. that trailer is over 500kgs from memory

just looked and " Alumax Plant trailer is an industry leading trailer with a payload of 2910kg " ... and as the cab-ed Kub is spec.ed at 2790kgs, it don't leave a lot for the tilty, fuel, etc. and some tish

I like the external look of some of the amaroks and the engine is a cracker shame about the tow capacity and the bland vw interior that all seems to be similar looking to a golf.
I did look at some prices for them lately and they are savage, a fair few k higher than similair aged and mileage ranger, which the ranger has also for some reason gained 10k on the list price in the last few years

Had 3. Love em. V6 engines a stonker. Not towing the 3.5t was an Achilles heel.
If you can get over the "only horsey women drive them" comments and filthy looks from the defender crowd on Greenlanes there ace.

Would the 2790kg not be operating weight so already including fuel then 70-80kg for operator plus one bucket??

Nice trailer but a lot of money for 70kg more payload than a Ifor GL1054.

On the prices I had best part of £700 for around 40kg of payload between the gh1054 1.2 skids and the alumax but the list of the alumax would have been just over 2k difference

Think 2790 is the transport weight plus hi spec bits of speced and mud, hitch etc

Just out of interest, would you say the Alumax is robust enough for general plant work ?

I must admit I've thought this as well especially long term. You'd certainly not get away wrong ball heights etc putting extra stress on trailer

Fred, I have no problem with people pushing the overweight thing, nobody is perfect and we've all been there.
However, I'm genuinely interested in how you managed to achieve to stay under weight with a KX030 (2790kg) and EC204 (116kg) with gripper (50kg).
Because even with no bucket that adds up to more than the Alumax says it can carry. Obviously all this is calculated by spec sheet weights not real life, did you find it weighed less in reality than the spec sheet suggests? I know this can happen depending on setup/ spec of the trailer/ digger.

I would love to run a gripper but haven't found a way of doing it with my machine of choice and still be able to tow somewhere around the rules.

Honestly don't know only seen one in the flesh, only thing with it is, there is no floor in the middle only the sides for the tracks and front section for the buckets. So if you wanted to load something narrower you would have to add some flooring, also heard rumours that it's only suitable for tracked machines as the point loading if tyres would be too much although this could just be utter bull.
I couldn't justify the money for 40kg or so of payload.
@fred how did yours stand up for general use?

@ollie I've been looking at this lately and only way would be to drop the tilty in the back of pickup which would mean going back to a roller shuttering or having a sliding floor to keep the canopy
