I've been considering changing from red, don't use a huge amount just running a 3t and 8t machines but the problems storing red with the higher bio content and filters clogging, particularly the volvo which uses a very small filter which starts to become restricted after only about 100hrs use, cheap enough to change but would rather just do it at 250h services as i have in the past.
If i'm going to have to change anyway is GTL or HVO a viable alternative to White? not quite ready to go electric or hydrogen yet!

It’s a great alternative in my experience. Filters are spotless when changed, not had any issues at all. There’s no downside as far as I can see?
only thing that bothers me on older kit is possibly loosing the natural lubrication in the injector pumps? Considered a shot of oil in the fuel now n again, but not sure it will mix properly? Having said that, it’s caused no issues at all, so maybe I’m worrying about nothing?

Any long term affects would be very difficult to prove, maybe shot of synthetic 2 stroke lube for the older stuff would be the way to go as its designed to mix ? The big question is how does it compare price wise ? and how readily available is it?

Been thinking of fitting a larger filter, Pre filter is always spotless, don't think its fine enough to catch the bio crap, main filter doesn't look dirty just restricted, machine runs rough after about 100h, new filter and its fine. Would prefer to run decent fuel to start with if there's a viable alternative? just a bit wary of new alternatives and long term affects, don't always believe manufactures claims but maybe I'm old and cynical

When they took the sulphur out of diesel they took the lubrication properties with it so i wouldn't think any alternative fuels would be any worse off in that respect. I don't believe newer fuel systems tolerate lack of lube a whole lot better either long term they are probably just easier to fix as parts are available due to not being as old.

On my old Massey 135, on neat red diesel it doesn't tick over as smooth as when its had a glug of 2 stroke added while filling up.

that's pretty good James ... presumably low duty/no VED on it .... wonder if it'll hike when the red/white crap kicks off ??

They do. Fewer moving parts, better metallurgy. Things have moved on.

£8.25 to fill an e10 up from empty. For couple of quid it's makes no difference on the rate n no risk of the fuel been pinched out the yard.

I know a few outfits that put in a heating oil tank at the yard and use that instead.

That'll quickly kill an engine/injector pump, especially common rail.

if by heating oil Fred means gas oil and not kero - it's cherry ... have considered changing my burner nozzle over to run gas oil instead of kero and filling me tank with cherry, but'll hopefully not need to .... will be having a conversation with Matt, me oil man, soon

63p for 850l and 45p for kero - 900l to top up me tank .. both +5%VAT

obvios answer is to replace it with a heat pump but its a lot of hassle retrofitting one into an existing house. It needs underfloor heating really to heat up the slab and a lot of insulation. You can use rads but due to the lower temp they need to double in size.

On the flip side you can get grants and payments towards one.

We are having to fit them on new builds shortly and people will be in for a shock. Going back to the 70's with a tank of hot water that wont support 3 or 4 showers each morning. High electric bills in winter when heat pumps dont work as well etc.

the reason for a change of burner nozzle'd be to get a tank full of cherry ...... **** ground source shite ... I like to be able to turn the heating on and be warm ... when it blows here it blows cold in the non-summer months

Can’t see them shutting a nationwide network of pipelines and supplies to a big percentage of properties. Suspect Hydrogen will be the next step.
