Exactly we are but small pawns in a much larger game , luckily it’s a lovely machine and I’m over the moon with it so there’s not to much hard felling even if I feel like it owes me a few quid already

A new project we’ve been on recently 20x10 site strip for a new welcome building ( ticket office with drinks ,food, shop and a toilet ). Very wet to say the least and finding an old culvert didn’t help . Plenty of stone in 150mm layers and throughly compacted before ( 1st layer was like driving on a magic carpet )50mm concrete blinding to give the steel fixers a base .Took 3 of them a day and a half I’d still be there now ! Then just a casual 36 cube of concrete. Block layers are in now and were cracking on with foot paths services and landscaping (photos to follow if I remember ) the hired in jcb 86 was some tool with a 36” bulker on really nice machine

Looking good though despite conditions. Is that groundwater rising or rainwater? Did you have to put some kind of drainage under the slab?

A lot of that water was the previous nights rainfall and the culvert we found. We had to dig out and repipe the culvert and we also put a few lengths of perforated pipe into a manhole so we could pump out any surface water. The tracks are longer Matt keeps the machine nice and stable and it’s ideal for unloading ! Even if it makes it tight on the trailer

What kind of money are those? il admit- I struggle to really see the benefit of one, The grabbing capacity looks pretty limited? I suppose on the right job it might come in to its own. You know what you want- a thumb!

It’s been ideal today been back filling around a site with some rough gear and it’s been proper for picking out crap and what not…I think it was a case of heavy metal disease that did for me it was just over a £1000 plus vat

Everyone says go for thumb but it just doesn't work for me

Think it would be brilliant on reinstatement work cleaning up of the deck and being able to pick any oversize out

Like I say it’s been ideal today. I’d forgotten what crap we’d dug out to start with was good the other day backfilling out of a dumper being able to drop sand where it was needed

The main downfall of thumbs is that you can’t always articulate the thumb into the position it needs to be to efficiently grab stuff, it works best at about mid reach- but into close it’s not so good- this is where a grab aces it. But for sheer convenience I think they’re hard to beat as they’re always on the machine and can work with any bucket.
