Thanks Dave,

Yes I've been lurking watching the Disco3 forum past couple of months, but yet to register.
It's a bit like the Facebook forums when a simple question is asked and you get 50 different answers "mine did this...."

I see you've got your IAM badge up front and proud on the previous pic. I assume this was via your time in uniform.
I've 31 years membership on mine this year. Still remember the observer runs and test like it was yesterday.

a good, smooth, safe drive is all about observation .... My old man was a police driving instructor in his later years in service and whenever we went anywhere was a 'refresher' .... got taught 'the method' which was their performance driving M.O. and you never forget it .. A to B as fast as possible - safely. .... they will never take a risk or chance their arm - every manoeuvre is based on observation of the road ahead, as far as they can see, whether it's the blacktop, telegraph wires/poles, road signs/markings, etc., or just knowledge. only way you will ever outrun a traffic cop is through reckless, dangerous driving ... and maybe some luck. otherwise you may as well give up, sooner rather than when you're upside down or in a hedge, or worse still you've hit some other poor bugger, when you've lost it. Speed is all about consistency.

but ........ WTF do you buy ??
Depends what it's for ...not popular suggestion probably ...but for me, get a decent contract hire rate on new , 1 fixed cost per month all in no surprises throw it back after 3 years, for her car it's peace of mind as all under warranty, breakdown etc etc..but as I say playing devils advocate. But works for me.😈 Some ridiculously cheap prices about atm.

And there's the problem Gra, no idea. Maybe a Fastrac? :ROFLMAO:
Ive been meaning to change mine for the last 3 years but have lost interest in it, last year got a new transit van and did 12k miles in that compared to 2k miles in the disco, ok you can say we’ve been in a lock down and all that, in fact thinking about it if the apocalypse comes a fastrac might be a useful tool 😎

advantage for a business as the cost can be set against tax and the vat reclaimed.
Aren't all leccy vehicles like that too ie. Luxury tesla buy thru business vat back, no BIK and offset against profits

What he said👆 didn't have anything particular in mind just heard few folk getting good deals on new , hundred odd quid a month gets you a run about with low miles
Like I said not for everyone but for hassle free option it works . I'd never have a newish Landrover on anything else, keeping one outside of warranty is suicidal 😱.

Yes that's right. Got my IAM in 1983 (38 yrs ago!) directly after I'd completed my Police Advance Driving Course.
Absolutely love driving and got a 1st Class Advanced. Still use the principles of "Roadcraft" whatever vehicle I am driving
P8190001.JPG

Done dozen more driving courses since then and as a Traffic Sergeant was also a Divisional Trainer and Assessor.
Mind you I also had to deal with numberous POLACCs.........

Great memories Graham - did you ever do yer IAM?
Police Driving Instructors were like God - I remember every one of my courses and what we got taught
On one of the first National Police Pursuit courses I remember, in the classroom, the Instructor saying,
"We will be going out to the M11 - 3 lane section to practice 'keep ons'. The subject car will be up ahead behind the rolling road block. As you come up to the next junction, punch up the hard should at 130 to stop him from going off"
Some wanker at the back said, "Ain't that dangerous, overtaking on the inside up the hard shoulder at 130?"
Instructor replies, "No it's 'reduced' safety margins' you are all 1st Class Advanced Drivers, if yo are not up to it there's the door!"
When we came to do it, it was such great fun using yer skills to out drive bandit cars.
Having punched through, we squashed it against the central armco and 'arrested' the instructor in the civvy car.
We always got loud applause from the other motorists, so we had to make it look real :devilish:

No Dave  ..... I had an 18 month intensive driving course to start my driving career :giggle: ...... had three test dates cancelled on me, over that period, so ended up with a hell of a course ..... and the longer it went on, the faster it got and the harder I got 'pushed'.... never did find my ceiling back then .... or since ;) ......

gave up owning fast(er) cars, once the cameras started to proliferate round here .... My 240 horse, SD1 Vitesse was the last 'rapid' motor I owned and a lovely XR4x4i, 'fore that - lovely drive - would have another in a heart beat, but'd be a license killer ....
the lil' Golf is bad enough, when you've been taught to make full use of what you can see to be 'yours' ;).
Old man used to say "if you get nicked by traffic, it's a fair cop and you deserve it for lack of observation ... but cameras just ain't cricket"

Only ever been pulled for 'speed' once .... 2.30 in the morning on a completely empty M4 in '78 ..... sat squarely in the N/s lane doing 110 on me way home from Reading .. lane either side of me and a pitch black road to myself - no moon. Was a good 4+ miles since I'd passed an on ramp when I'd suddenly got a set of heads behind me followed by a set of blues ........ "dirty bar stewards", thought I.
indy on and slow to the shoulder. I am stood beside the motor, before they'd gotten to me. " 'Evening sir, your vehicle? can you tell me what speed you were doing?"
"yes officer, mine, OAX 234M and 110, on a completely empty road, until you 'appeared' behind me .... it's over 4 miles since I last passed an on ramp and can only assume you've been behind me with no lights on since then "
" Er! .... have you been drinking sir? "
" No, I don't drink and drive .. my father is a traffic officer .. I know better "
" So you wouldn't mind providing a breath sample? "
" not at all officer " :giggle:

His mate had by now PNC-ed me, been right round me motor .... found an almost new set of Michys all round and a well sorted, taxed, MOT-ed vehicle - Hunter GLS with a 130 Holbay 1725 motor, on twin 40 Webers and an overdriven box from a Humber Sceptre aiding progress. (Nott.s plod used them at the time - and were, for their day, a very quick car :giggle: )
Matey is running out of 'options', as he knows, that I know, he's been rumbled :giggle::giggle:

This was the days when the breathaliser was the old placcy bag with the crystal filled tube and was not an easy thing to use in the dark :)
went through the process and it obviously came back as green as grass ... which was not what he was hoping for :(

" so where are you going Mr Hookham and why in such a hurry ? "
"on my way home from some friends in Reading, officer. The road is completely deserted and I am simply ' making progress ' according to the road conditions ... and it's very late. If you'd come down the on ramp with your lights on I'd have backed off, until I knew 'what' you were " (if he'd come on with his blues on I'd have been ****ed)

" well we'll 'let it go' on this occasion, but we will be behind you and you are obviously aware that the limit is 70MPH "
" Thank you officer, good night "

bugger followed me for two junctions 'fore he shot off and I gave it a few miles 'fore winding it up again on a still deserted M4. :giggle:

Told the old man about it the next day and he laughed .... said " he knew you had him and had no option -- played it just right Gra "

anyway .... 'bout five years later, my brother got T boned in Usk by someone pulling out of a side street into his back quarter and blocked the road. Plod attended and when bro gave them his name PC whatever says to him " I pulled you on the M4 'bout five years ago doing 110 in a Hunter GLS "
" Nah ... that was my brother ... told me and the old man all about how you'd followed him for 4+ miles with yer lights off " :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Traffic plods have a memory like an elephant :giggle::giggle: ... eh Dave? ;):)

IF you decide to replace the P38 don't get another Land Rover brand. Over the years I've had Disco 1, Disco 2 TD5, Disco 3 base manual and Disco 3 HSE. At the time loved everyone of them, but you need to know yer way round a box of spanners and have good finances ;)
Disco 1 with 300TDi was fantastic but rust started to take hold. Underpowered for towing 3.5T
Disco 2 with TD5. Great with more power. Auto box best for towing but overheated when working hard
Disco 3 TDV6 manual box and remap. Front lower and rear upper wishbone bushes wear out quickly.
You need a sense of humour if you need to change the gearbox with the body on.🤣
For most serious stuff you take the body off.
But with complex CANBUS system you need serious diagnostics with a LR Licence to sort out and reset the DTCs.
Disco 3 HSE - the best of the bunch. Got this fairly new with some LR Warranty.
Fantastic drive and comfort. Loads of power with a remap:cool:
But LR wiggled out of the wishbone claim saying it was wear and tear:mad:
As above for the manual job with some serious DTC faults cropping up. Bong - limp mode and suspension lowers.
Not good if you are miles from base towing 3.5T
Loads of stupid faults, like front to rear brake hoses rusting out after 5 years. Turbo actuator going faulty with more DTCs
Worst of all the engine has a history of self destruct when the cam belt lets go. Usually just after being replaced - AVOID
BUT, 2 years ago I went to the dark side and bought a Nissan Navara Tekna 4 door pickup truck with Truckman hard top etc
Best thing I did for my business and pleasure use
So I recommend that when you replace the P38 you get a 4 door pickup truck
There are some great deals to be had on good used models and discussion can be had on all the different models ;)
How about a Disco 4 then?
We have two, one on 85k the other on 195k.
85k one, front lower wishbones
Maf sensor
Stop start battery
Servicing, tyres etc
195k one, front lower wishbone X2
2x maf sensors
Level sensor
1x inlet manifold ( done myself, one day and £250)
Servicing, tyres etc.
I don't think that is bad at all for these vehicles considering they are work horses that both do a lot of towing.
Need the disco 5 prices to come down so I can move on to one of those next.
