Pump needs to come off and have it's main shaft seal replaced.

Might end up with fuel passing into the sump then. It needs fixing properly imo, the hole is there for a reason.

I'm all for fixing stuff right, its seems a big job. The tractor hasn't done much. The past couple of months when it starts it stops after a few seconds then when you start it again its ok.
Perhaps this is the problem

Imo you’ve got to get the pump off and overhauled, or at the very least have the shaft seal replaced. It’s the likely cause of the starting issue, and will only get worse.

I think it may force any leaking diesel into the crank case? I expect that is why the hole is there.

That bailer an older MF? Or something more exotic like ransomes (guessing by the colour)

Like others have suggested, it’s a weep hole to prevent or reduce the amount of leakage into the timing case and therefore the sump. The starting problem is caused by the same thing. I’d say pump shaft seal will need replacing at the very least and a pump refurb the best option. Easy job to do, that style of pump is easy to remove and should only take a few hours to mount and bleed back up. I’d get it sorted fairly quick I’m afraid as diluted oil won’t do the engine any favours. If your stuck I can route out the service procedure for pump removal and timing if necessary. I think that pump will need to be locked at No1. Tdc then the bolt above the weep hole wound in once tab has been slid down. Mark the pump rotation on studs if not already marked.

Haha you dragged it out of the nettles sometime around July 2016. Love it. Never seen one of those.

Not bad balers those old Jones, they did get better but got left behind by the likes of Welger. Then along came round bales and hesston’s. Instead of baling 30 acre in a long day, over 100 in a day became easy to achieve and that lead to the conventional Baler becoming less widely used.

That would be very handy. I am not a mechanic but can do basic stuff. Where would you take the pump to get it fixed. I'm in South cheshire
