Yes as druid says above slide that pin back. Also should be a little sprung lever below that pin, old boy I bought mine off said to give it a couple of pulls before trying to start.

Bizarre but i find it easier to start without messing with compression. It's to hard to get spinning then mess with the handle. The old boy who I bought off was around 70 and could start with compression. He said theres a knack to it winding it round tell you hit the resistance then a bit of a rhythm. He was right TBF, it has been crap lately because of cold weather I think but still always start without messing with compression

No it's like the same handle as the decompression lever. Hidden below in that picture. I think the old boy told me it squirts some juice in. I just do what he said 4 or 5 years later lol

I wonder if some joker has turned the pawl in the starter handle round and you're trying to start it backwards ;)
Turning clockwise and there is a arrow the same way but it is just like that it seems to stop instantly when I turn on compression

if it's an Alligator like mine, it's a conventional starter handle with a pin through the shaft, with a self ejecting driven dog ... will only crank the one way.
not like a conventional Petter starting handle on the crank ... the dog is a good 2 feet in from the rear frame of the dumper's body/chassis
if it's a conventional 'on the crank, reversible handle check to see which way it rotates after it's been tow started ... or put it in first and wind the handle to check it goes forward with the decomps set or could be chasing it down the yard if it started by some miracle :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
hi I tryed that to find where all the gears where, I will double check next time I start it

mine are linked :(.. but interesting idea (y)... could look at disconnecting 'em ... while since I looked at it and can't recall how they're connected
they are simple to disconnect just 2 split pin to take out I took one out to try it but the decompression vibrates off on the cylinder not connected, I need to make up something to hold it in place and I will try again

They are hateful. PH2 Petter engine bags of s**t IMHO.

You can get conversion kits to electric start on ebay for around £900.
Petter ph2 is a good engine, you are so wrong about the engine, I have one on a thwaites 4000 1983 and it starts first time even when it’s -3 outside.

Good for you.... We have had about 10 of them... each one as hateful as the last.... fortunately I have only got two left and one of them will soon be going to China too. Listers give me far less problems.
