Hydraulic generators

Has anyone any experience with these? I’m toying with the idea of fitting one to my loader.
One type of job we do we run electric conveyors and take a generator with us, but it is petrol and the rest of my stuff is diesel and I’m always paranoid leaving it overnight in the back of the van in hotel car parks, so wondered if a built in one might be the answer.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
just a conventional alternator driven by a Hyd motor Gra ... find a lil' genny with a dead motor and convert it .... won't be as efficient as your stand alone one though

If your going to do that and it's your own machine why not run see if it can be run directly off the engine rather than use inefficient hydraulics
May even be able to swap existing alternator for far bigger one

I obviously don't understand electricity. My current alternator puts ot 12v 40amp. I want 6kw 110v and still the 12v to charge the battery. Don't I need a seperate system?

realistically the easiest way Gra .... the machine's alternator is designed to put out the level of voltage and current required by its systems ...
your conveyor's requirements are totally different so a separate supply is the simplest answer.
can you not acquire a diesel powered genny and a good steel tool safe for it to live in on site, with maybe the machine sat on it overnight, rather than leaving it in the van .....
I'd assume your sites are seriously secure over night and probably the daytime too?

you could install an additional LARGER alternator on the machine, with sufficient space available to do it and a way to drive it from the machine's motor .... but TBH what you have is far more flexible and doesn't tie your machine up .... plus a 6Kva alternator will seriously deplete your m/c's power output for other actions

You can get auxillary alternators which then can feed an inverter to give you 240v - used to see lots of them on utility vans etc. with 110 sockets.

A bit more background. When the conveyors are working the loader is stopped, just holding a bulk bag open for waste on the forks. When it is working, moving stuff about the conveyors are stopped.
I made the mistake of buying a petrol genny initially and am now looking at the best way forward. Most jobs I can leave all the equipment on site in perfect safety overnight, but I still have to get it there and back which often involves staying in hotels. It is also just one more engine to check and maintain.

I guess this is the sort of thing:
Hydraulic just looked easy. I could mount it where I wanted, no worries about drive belts etc and I could turn it on and off as required. I guess the alternator would run all the time like a standard alternator so would sap power whether I was using it or not.

The one thing re gennys petrol are a lot easier handled than diesel equivalents weight wise (obvs more appealing to tea leaves). Hydraulic conv will be power and fuel hungry in comparison and its not as flexible as everything having its own power source.

Would it be worth altering the conveyors to hydraulic drive?

I had thought about it, but too much work/hassle and then I couldn't use electric if I didn't have the loader with me for some reason.

What about a Honda engine straight on the conveyor then they still have there own power source without loader

I can see where you are coming from, but it doesn't feel like an upgrade from where we are now. 4 new engines to buy, somehow fit and then maintain. Plus fumes on indoor jobs.

hire a genny at each job site ?

I know what your looking to do Graham and it makes sense to me! I have seen hydraulic gennys on cherry pickers before, could be a good place to start looking< hire firms workshops etc.
I don,t see why you couldn't mount one on the rear of your norcar and pipe it into the rear hydraulics etc!

This one came up in a quick google search, so it would give you an idea of a price to work on!

If he converted to hydraulic, I guess he could just run it off the loader though?
