What have I bought

Good morning, Just bought my first mini-digger, a 1995 JCB803 to move the garden around. Bought it on a bit of a whim. Seems a bit jumpy when not at full speed. Just replaced top rollers. It wasn't supposed to be another project, but I get the feeling I'm going to know a lot more about this mini-digger by the time we've got rid of COVID. I'm sure I'll be posting various questions on here in the near future.

Every JCB I’ve ever sat on has been a great driving machine tbh - I don’t have the ownership experience to comment on anything else. There seems to be a lot of negative heresay towards them which is a shame (deserved or not).

Without wanting to start a bun fight, what has stopped you buying one thus far? If you’ve had good experience operating them ?

I’ve only ever bought two diggers - a 6 tonner (where JCB were miles out on price) and a 2.7 tonner where they didn’t offer a machine that ticked all the boxes. And I tried to buy a JCB telehandler but ended up with a Merlo as it was the right machine at the right money.

I know yours has been good to you James and your previous 8 series gear (which was in all fairness a great range of machines) ... similarly my 3CX has been good to me too (we won't mention the mouse though) ... pity the bean counters screwed 'em over

to be fair Kev @Furniss the stickers probably stay on longer than the paint :rolleyes::cry: their older gear, before the bean counters ran the show, were on the whole good bits o' kit .... they just seem to have lost their way .. big time .. the 3t 803s have a pretty good rep. and from what i have read/hear, I think i'd certainly consider investing in a decent example ... I mean even Rory likes the 803 ... so must have summat going for it .... and they don't seem to come up too often either, so folks must like hanging on to 'em

Yep id have an old 803. Used to be the hire machine choice of most back in the day. I think the last ones were around 2004 ish?

Sorry Graham but there is a lot of shite spouted by people with no or very little experience of actually running JCB's long term, if we are talking mini/midi diggers then Ive had at least 12 years running 801's - 802's - 803's - 8060 - 8080's versions versus the last 5 years running Kubota in 1.7t - 2.8t - 8t and I have had at least as many issues with Kubota versus JCB and I think I would be right in saying that Kubota is regarded as among the most relaible of brands in this sector, imo they did loose their way a bit in the 2000's and I had a few inj pump issues with my last 8t but as I have found out latterly they all have their problems and I'll be giving JCB's new generation stuff a look at when the time comes.

+ although I dont think of myself as overly patriotic (I moved to France FFS) I dont understand the mentality of continually dragging down a British Brand, now more than ever.

Place where I worked in England bought an "802 super" new and I drove it from the first day, mainly on golf course work ..... few years after leaving and going on my own I rang the old boss and arranged to buy it off him to go with my 1.5t so I must of liked it 🙂...used it for another 5 years and it never let me down 👍
