Log splitters

Thinking of a decent log splitter to go on the back of the tractor..(when I get it!) ideally I want something I can just hook up and crack on with, but I don’t want to be there hours to just fill one crate. We have 5 log burners in the family to keep going and won’t mind selling the odd trailer load to friends to give an idea of output required.. what are folk running? Currently I just have a axe and bad back

I would say you would be better off with a processor but big money compared to a splitter. Dan monkey buisnes would be the chap to ask

Don’t bother with a processor unless you are buying in processor-sized timber would be my advice - they are crap on anything non-uniform.
Cheap and cheerful you won’t go wrong with Oxdale.
If you want something fast and amazing have a look at what Ryetec sell.
Mike Harper at Harbrook Engineering in Burland near Nantwich has made some of the greatest 2-station log splitting tables (with hydraulic log lift etc) I’ve ever seen - if you are in the market I’d definitely get a price off him.
All off-the-shelf splitters should only operate with 2 hands on the controls, and should never be fed by one person a d operated by another for obvious reasons. Two handed operation does slow down throughput. Many can be easily bypassed if you see fit, but don’t do that if you are using commercially or employing someone to use the machine.

Unless running off pto digger far superior for running splitter off if aux line has detent mode (constant pump) just got to be careful as hydraulic pressure on a digger is higher than tractor so cheaper splitters won't last.
Hence the now homemade splitter as the only bit worth saving was the ram and valve. It is two handed mind

I used an Oxdale this weekend (hired in from the local hire place). As @Monkeybusiness says, cheap and cheerful - I had the petrol engined one because they didn't have a PTO version, but it was bomb proof and once you got into the swing quite quick.

With me splitting and SWMBO building the stacks we got two of these done over the weekend (sorry about the pic - light was falling)

Whatever you end up with make sure it has a big table. The hardest part of the job is getting the rings to working height -having nowhere to store them as you break them down gets boring fast.
The Oxdale in @Randla’s post above has the oversize table which is a must imo.

Keep meaning to get round to making a table to go at the end of mine, tis a right pain without.

My Granda picked this one up at euro auctions about ten years ago, £375 quid paid for its sell many times over! Gets a about 20 hours use a year if it’s lucky.

You just need the right processor & workers.

I often do jobs for people to sort out arb waste.

The last job we did 74m3 over each 3 day stint we did.

Also make sure it has auto return
It doubles the time having to manually return the splitter each time
I've used
Posch - they are alright but not the best engineering a few cut corners
Bindeberger - these are the rolls Royce of kit well made and lots of neat ideas
A whole selection of rebranded things all the same in different colours Inc oxdale
These are sloppy- fine if you are on nice ash but not really up to the job of gnarly stuff and tend to run out of grunt
The best are always home made with a fat ram on an rsj the self returning bit is easy to engineer to

I’d imagine somewhere between £4-£5k, but I am guessing. I’ve seen them in the flesh/working and they are very well made.
