Slow starting diesel.

My dumper is slow to start cold and won't start hot without a shot of brake cleaner. It needs full throttle to start in either situatuon. Also it dies when you close the throttle. I've replaced the glow plug , fuel tank and filter and checked the valve clearance. Ive checked for a filter on the fuel pump but can't see one. Is it likely to be injector/ pump or compression related?

Also It makes a fair bit of black smoke at higher revs.

Black smoke suggests it is getting diesel so looking at simple things first is the air filter ok. It could be a pump or injector problem but I saw a forklift once that had so much ether poured in to the air intake that the filter had gone soggy & collapsed suffocating the engine.

Air filter is new. Could it be worth trying a new starter motor?

if your comp. is down it'll need throwing over in some order and if the starter is tired and slow, it's never going to start

Usually more bother when cold rather than hot with low comp from my own experience. If its slow turning over it deffo won't help. Make sure battery terminals are clean etc for a start off.

It's a TCP with a Kubota oc95e single cylinder air-cooled engine with 800 hours.
I think I'll probably try a new injector and then a fuel pump if I can find one to buy rather than send my one off.

I would first pop test the injector. this is a cheap enough tool, we brought one and it's a f****ng godsend https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Diesel-I...892469?hash=item5da9647875:g:V7sAAOSwIOxey4u8

Black smoke suggests unburnt fuel, which would suggest the injector is not atomizing the fuel properly, this would also potentially lead to poor starting. It's unlikely to be the fuel pump as it's obviously getting fuel.

I would also get a compression tester on it as par for the course.

I have a petrol compression tester somewhere, I'll have a look to see if it can do diesel. What's a good pressure for a diesel?
Has anyone changed a diesel for a petrol engine? The reason I ask is because this thing is very useful and makes life much easier but it's so bloody loud it's just ridiculous! It literally makes the floor shake and you struggle to talk to people even if you shout.

Generally for a diesel, you would want a tester suitable for measuring 300 - 400 psi, most petrol engines are in the region of 100 - 150psi.
Off the top of my head our diesel compression tester goes to 1000 psi (in the red).

Can petrol engines with hydraulic pumps idle nice and quiet like a Wacker plate can?

Centrifugal clutch on petrol wackers etc. Petrol engine will have higher rev range so you'd more than likely need to account for this dunno if there's pulleys or gearing you could change. If you think engine change will be the easiest solution depending on the fault with the kubota probs find a yanmar to go on

I have a single cyl Yanmar on a roller I was thinking of swapping for a petrol engine for the same reason

I think it's direct drive on my dumper. It looks like the pump goes on the end of the crank.

Noisy single cylinder air cooled diesel , sounds like the Robin on my tyre fitting compressor. Trying to keep the revs down to avoid annoying the neighbours caused the rings to stick and give the same problem you've got. I slid the barrel off and gently worked the rings to unstuck them while wd40 ing them. Been fine since, just make a point of giving it a good thrashing every so often

Forgot to say that the automatic de-compressor makes checking the compression difficult

Should be pretty easy to change petrol for diesel. Lifan engines are cheap and reliable. Only downside is that you will use more £ worth of fuel in a day.

If it's a 1" keyed shaft then should be really simple- just make some mounts up.

decent little lumps those Loncins ... Hodna copy - (blatant) :giggle:

I've been thinking. Would 20 hp be enough power to run a decent stump grinder?
Honda do a nice little v twin with 20-22 hp. I was thinking I could then use the dumper as a donkey engine with oil tank (20l) and then get a grinder attachment for the e10. This would make a narrow access stump grinder? This all depends on dumper having a 1 inch shaft.
Sound like a daft idea?
Something like this
