Micro and dumper over slabs

You’re robbing yourself at that rate mate. £270 here, and that’s if I’m feeling generous. A man is £200 a day everywhere, you can’t go providing the digger for that too let alone the dumper also!

You’re pricing too cheap and attracting the scummy customers.
Too right getting £190-240 day even with current carry on,taking too much on for £200 a day, digger, dumper hassle of jobs n getting paid

Day rate = turn up with digger , everything is extra.
Price job = everything is factored in!
Quite simple really!

No way on earth could I turn up to day rate jobs and be armed with everything possibly required! A lot of the time I’d go blind , no money in spending a few hours the day before checking a job out. Obviously if something was required unforeseen on the day I’d bend over backwards to sort it - at a price!

The next job with slabs will have to be a price. This was a day rate and I told the customer straight off we would need boards. Have to draw the line somewhere, I think digger, dumper and driver for £200 a day is cheap. I can't start adding 15m of ply, breakers, augers and God knows what else for the same rate.

Sorry but feck that, £280 for the digger and man, dumper £70 extra, I would however 'lend' the customer a few boards as a favour to help them out. That said I have a tipper so can fit everything on one trip, if I had to do another trip I'd want more money.
I know we're in uncertain times but last year I was offered £220 a shift with a van as a full time job so I ain't goin out with my own stuff takin the responsibility for less money

I disagree, he might be a s**t driver and is only worth £150 a day 😂

Passed a job on to someone whilst I was busy last year, 3 sides of a lean to extension with pre marked clay drains running across with depths noted... he charged £150 a day..... managed to hit both pipes on both sides of the extension. You really do get what you pay for sometimes! 🤣

Random guy messaged me asking for a ‘mini digger and driver to dig shed base’ on Tuesday - 5.6x3.6x1m deep and 600 wide 🤔, substantial shed - bear in mind the garden was only about 10m long and prob 5m wide - I replied ‘no problem what do you want done with the spoil?’ ‘I’m going to spread it in the garden, can you do the job for £200 cash?’ - Twat Tax got duly applied and told him I’m £450 a day plus diesel and parking (on his drive). Weirdly I’ve not heard back.

The other day rate customers that piss me off are the ones that say “you could of done it quicker but you took an hour measuring and marking it out?!” “Ok mate I’ll bring my auto square laser measure spectacles next time so I can just turn up at 8am and start smashing the digger bucket around randomly” 😏🤓

" No .. they're holding the washing on the line at home" 'd been my reply :ROFLMAO:

Don't agree with supplying the boards for free.
Price for the boards, ideally you need to either bill for half or 100% of the cost.
It's a pain have to fit them on the trailer and then having to store them somewhere.
9 boards will hold a grab load of material.
The boards don't last I use 12mm OSB for two reasons it's not an ice rink once wet and muddy and their cheaper than ply - fair enough ply lasts longer

I've had no issues with broken slabs so far, but always say we accept no responsibility for any damages slabs, some are happy to pay for them and others are happy to roll the dice.

Had one a few weeks ago where quite a few sandstone slabs were rocking and amazingly none broke, filled an 8yrd skip with the htd5 tracking up and down on them for a few jours

Other issue is after throwing your second hand used ply down and the embedded stones scratch the patio is there is now no defence..... When it's over a lawn or to dump some soil on to make a temporary staging area it's different, but new patio? Nope best buy some boards!

worse one is when you completely load up the ‘tip/grab area’ and are waiting for the grab to turn up and the customer always at the end of the job try’s to knock money off for you standing around doing nothing...! Ok I’ll have two grabs on turn around at about 1k a day then, won’t be any waiting around then 🤷‍♂️ And you wonder why I cba with domestic anymore!!

I’ve never had that. Which is lucky, cause if I did I think I’d be likely to knock the **** out.

How you blokes put up working for the public amazes me. Must have mega patience.

Nope, just tell em like it is when you look at a job. If they get upset then leave. Honesty, Integrity and Abuse are the 3 key things to my site visits.

R.e the waiting time thing is why I love my lorry.... they think i'm doing them a favour not charging for standing time when infact i'm making more money on the muckaway than the diggers can earn

I find the opposite to be true, working for council and EDF ect is always a lot more pissing about and hassle, other people showing you what to do,meetings etc etc
I do 80% domestic work a lot of treatment plants etc and we rarely have any trouble - 99% of the time we get 30% deposit upfront - remainder day we leave.
Works perfectly, bollocks to waiting for 3 months to be paid.

As a small sole trader operator have to do private work a lot of the time. It’s a question of using yer communication skills in a humorous way. Self deprecation often helps 😅
As Rory says let them think you are doing them a favour with the extras. My 2 tonne tipper is great for dealing with spoil from local small dig outs and adds to my stock of dirt. Win win 😜
There again big builders and civils can f**k you about with getting money out of them 🤬
Have got a nice stack of new and used ply here ready to go.
Have been on the Customer Care Training Course 🤠
At the end of the day you choose the jobs you wanna do and walk away from the rest 😎

Day rate - You should be supplying digger and operator. Wackers, dumpers, disc cutters, ply board, ramps over garden walls are all extra.

Price work - Everything factored in, as its at your risk unless you stated in your quote / estimate ground conditions, contaminated ground, breaking out obstructions.

Do you have a permit to store dug out material along with a waste carriers licence?
