Anyone run a tractor with dump trailer or low loader? I know it’s mostly frowned upon amongst most folk who don’t actually run them but whatever! Show us your setups?

I’ll be looking to get a tractor next year, need to start topping off some paddocks and will eventually need to take over from our hedge cutting contractor as he’s beyond retirement already, maybe a multi purpose trailer as well wouldn’t go amiss.. next job has a lot of muck to shift(on site) so would be handy

Run this along side our lorry. To be honest it rarely gets used. But sometimes access for lorry is tight so this comes out. Also have the last dump trailer TBF Thompson made. Good trailer with the front loading door to get the mini diggers inside for transport. But to be honest if I was buying a new trailer I wouldn’t bother with the front door

I’ve got this JPM 14 tonne multi purpose dump trailer which I rate - it comes with ramps etc that store under the body and you can squeeze an 8 tonne machine in (but the standard ramps are only rated for 6 tonnes). They now do them with a magic back door that drops down (mine is up-and-over) which I would have if buying again. I’m not sure how it would stand up to being roughly loaded with rock day-in day-out but as a good all-rounder it is worth a look IMO.

I’ve got some pics of it with diggers in but am struggling to get my phone to locate them - an 8 tonne CAT was a tight squeeze but went in ok.

Multi purpose trailer is a bit Jack of all master of none. To carry 14 ton load they tend to be a fair bit longer than equivalent dump trailer. Imo anything over 6 ton needs to be on a plant trailer as otherwise far too much load on hitch. Demo tractor getting loaded in local quarry about 5 year back

Loads of old kit in there tbh, won't have anything modern. I'll tell you something though you couldn't load as fast with a 14 tonner and the old rb barely uses any fuel either.

I haven't used one of the multipurpose trailers but have used a lowloader trailer running on full size trailer Tyre rather than the little duels putting the weight very high and wasn't very nice to tow or load
Very steep ramps and alot of weight very high
I much prefer using the low profile tri axles much more stable less weight on the draw bar and nicer to load also not worrying about smashing the digger cab up on low branches

Yeah that's where that's at. Basically doesn't like anything hydraulic cos there's not enough skill or work involved

to drive it.

It’s held onto the up-and-over arms with 4 lynch pins - you remove the top ones and fold it down to attach the ramps. Bit of a faff though as you have to remove the ramps from the carrier with the door up - even though the ramps are aluminium they are pretty heavy so double handling them becomes tiresome quickly (you have to get them out then fold the door down to attach). The door is also a heavy lump to fold up/down. To be honest, I leave the door off most of the time (unless I’m shifting big loads of material). The newer magic door does away with all of these issues and is a much better design. (I also don’t tend to bother with the ramps tbh - I can climb in and out with my 6 tonner easily enough which save manual handling)...
With regards it being a ‘Jack of all, master of none’ I agree to an extent but it is much more versatile for my use than a stand-alone dump trailer. I bought it for a job on Anglesey that involved moving machines to multiple rural sites and then shifting earth/stone etc about once there (normally a different location each day). A plant/low-loader trailer wouldn’t have got to some of the jobs - this was perfect in that role and I’ve subsequently kept it because it’s so versatile.
Taking a machine to a job and not having to come back to base to collect another trailer to move stuff about saves loads of time on small jobs. If I’m only taking the digger to a job I’ll tend to take this before the low loader due to its compact size.
I’ve never considered its nose-weight as being considerable tbh - it’s nowhere near as heavy on the tractor when fully loaded as some of my linkage-mounted kit.

The front door is a faff aswell on this. Ur in and out of the tractor a few times to get it set up. Also u need real solid ground to load. Concrete tarmac etc. If it’s just a stone yard the weight of the digger goin over the draw bar pushes the stool into the ground and then u can’t get it hooked on again. The tail door on my trailer is a great job it folds down the way, meaning u can carry anything. Big tree stumps etc will never get stuck in it. I often thought a long set of ramps goin in over the back would have been a beter option than the folding front door. But I don’t use it that often and like ur self i went in and out a few times over the back without the ramps..
