Turns out they did weigh him (individual axles). 900kg tri-axle trailer, 2.8 tonne knocker, driver and passenger and a few tools and a tractor battery in the tub. The axle weights were all legal (!) but the guy told him a packet of crisps would have sent him over…
Then they did him for no tacho! 🤣

Just out to get money where they can, how many miles did he do, I did read something about no tacho if you drive less than 4 hours a week, so you could do a single 4 hour trip and be ok

Gloucester from Cheshire - about 90 miles. He was pulled in Shrewsbury (well within the radius) and could definitely have blagged it but he didn’t know that he was doing anything wrong and basically hung himself by being honest!
(He was relieved to not get done for overloading too!!!).

So it was because he wasn’t in a ‘genuine DPV’ ?

Dmax would be dpv but tacho regardless for outside the 60 mile radius of base
It's a really shitty thing for them to do and it's easy to see why people hate traffic cops especially in these situations where of they can't do you for one thing they will go out of their way to find something else

Prob still cheaper than paying a dedicated haulier...🙃

Explain to me these car hauliers then 😑😂
Running bent.
Have seen a fair bit lately where they are pulling more car transporters not just the overloaded 3.5t "recovery" vans but trailer set ups too

Ah that is interesting (and disappointing). I thought there was an exemption for DPV. I need to dig into how exempt a privately owned 3.5ton camper van is outside of 60 mile radius !

So the other day I took a trailer down to Penryn - which is 78 miles away, which looks like I was outside of the rules :-(

Might be ok if within the radius (even if 78 miles by road).

Totally exempt because it's private..... Likewise if your a sole trader anything from your truck to your lorry can be used entirely privately.... The caviate is insurance..... My lorry and pickups are all own business use and SDP....... If I didn't have the last bit on I'd have no get out.

I've not got time to go on my normal rant reference UK vehicle use laws...... But as normal reform them, simplify and deregulate elements and you will overnight increase compliance and road safety.

Ta. I 'should' be fine then either way. All work vehicles have a SDP and my camper has work use included on insurance. And for any trips into deep Cornwall / over 100K then I will just make sure I am out and about in wee hours to minimise risks.

I fully agree that the rules and regs involving trailers on 3.5t vehicles are far too overlapping and complicated. If a group of fairly knowledgeable folks on here still cant grasp it fully - then the average Joe stands no chance.

Tacho rules / exemptions
O - Licence rules / exemptions
Trailer weights.
Towing Vehicle weights
Axle weights
Nose weights
load security
Licencing
Insurance
ADR
Waste Carriers licencing

etc etc the list goes on.

For a van converted into a camper, I’m sure I’ve seen something recently that it doesn’t specifically go on what the logbook shows, more how the vehicle is used. That was in regard to speed limits so I assume the same with tacho etc.

Edit, found them. IMG_1240.jpeg

I once had an in depth call it "discussion" at the side of the a55 with a Welsh cop he wanted to give me a summons as I was doing 90 in my old kombi he reckoned it should have been the 60 limit anyway eventually I persuaded him I was a car and settled for the 3 points . late on a Saturday night after the menai bridge not a soul on the road deserted . Was hiding up the sliproad the little swine.😑

My camper is likely over 3050kg naked so I don’t chance it too much but if I get pulled for 70 on dual carriageway I shall argue it
